Ultrasound-assisted extraction of polysaccharides from Artemisia selengensis Turcz and its antioxidant and anticancer activities

Abstract: Artemisia selengensis Turcz (AST) is a perennial herb with therapeutic and economic applications in China. The effects of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) parameters upon extraction yield (EY%), antioxidant and antitumor activities of the polysaccharides extracts were studied by using a factorial design and response surface methodology. The optimal conditions determined were as: ultrasonic power 146 W, extraction time 14.5 min. and extraction temperature 60°C. The average molecular weights of two homogeneo… Show more

“…To address these problems, microwaveassisted extraction [15] and supercritical fluid extraction [20] have been developed for the extraction of flavonoids [15]. Although those methods efficiently extract flavonoids from plant materials, the microwave-assisted extraction is difficult to scale up and requires high microwave power, which increases energy consumption [15,21], whereas the supercritical method proceeds at high pressure (48 MPa), which requires expensive reactor and rises a safety concern [20]. Enzyme-assisted extraction has been proposed as another alternative for the flavonoids extraction because this process was performed at mild extraction conditions [22,23].…”

“…In recent years, the ultrasound-assisted process has gained increased interest in the phytochemical extraction due to its rapid and high extraction efficiency [21,24]. is method employs ultrasonication, which is ultrasonic waves, to disrupt a cell wall through inducing cavitation in the solvent [21].…”

“…UEAE is an assisted extraction method combined ultrasonic with enzyme, which is undoubtedly an emerging technology in the food industry since it owns advantages of two extraction methods such as mild extraction conditions, lower investment costs and energy requirements, and simplified manipulation. It is an effective method for polysaccharides extraction that has a higher yield and bioactivity (Wang et al, ). Given this, it is necessary to compare the various extraction methods on Gynura medica polysaccharides.…”
