Ultrafast time measurements by time-correlated single photon counting coupled with superconducting single photon detector

Abstract: Time resolution is one of the main characteristics of the single photon detectors besides quantum efficiency and dark count rate. We demonstrate here an ultrafast time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) setup consisting of a newly developed single photon counting board SPC-150NX and a superconducting NbN single photon detector with a sensitive area of 7 × 7 μm. The combination delivers a record instrument response function with a full width at half maximum of 17.8 ps and system quantum efficiency ∼15% a… Show more

“…For high bias currents, the noise-induced jitter becomes very small, an improvement in the amplification chain could possibly reduce it even more [18,22], which could potentially lead to system jitters below 20 ps. We note that the intrinsic jitter j int strongly depends on the applied bias current.…”

“…Also a high local oscillator (LO) power greater than 1 mW is required for the SBD heterodyne detection 39 . Unlike SBDs, the superconducting HEB is a thermal detector only working at cryogenic temperature below 5 K. However, it is enough sensitive for single photon detection 37 , while the NEP of SBDs lies in 10 −10  W/ level. In order to use a HEB as a mixer, it has to be fast.…”

“…where j setup includes the laser pulse width and measurement imprecisions, j noise is the contribution from the amplification and electronic parts, j intrinsic includes the timing variation of the hotspot itself, and j geometric is linked to the path the signal has to propagate depending on the photon absorption location in the nanowire 19 . a) Electronic mail: misael.caloz@unige.ch A wide range of values have been reported for different geometries and materials, typically from few to hundreds of picoseconds 14,18,20,21 . A record value of 2.7 ps at 400 nm wavelength have been recently achieved with a NbN device 22 , which demonstrates that there is still room for improvements.…”
