Introduction: Porphyromonas gingivalis is bacteria that can form biofilms as the main cause of periodontitis. Mouthwash therapy in long term can cause mucositis and even oral cancer. Antibacterial potential of torch ginger flower (Etlingera elatior) can be developed as an alternative adjuvant therapy for periodontitis. Objective: Aims of this research was to determine the effect of torch ginger flower ethanol extract against degradation of P. gingivalis biofilm. Methods: This research used ethanolic extract of torch ginger flower with concentrations 1.56 mg/mL, 3.125 mg/mL, 6.25 mg/mL, 12.5 mg/mL, 25 mg/mL, and 50 mg/mL. Chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2% was used as positive control and DMSO 1% was used as negative control. Measurement of P. gingivalis biofilm degradation used microtiter plate assay with crystal violet 1% staining which reads its optical density at wavelength of 450 nm. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and Post hoc LSD. Results: The percentage of P. gingivalis biofilm degradation with torch ginger flower ethanol extract sequentially were 12.47%, 30.56%, 57.12%, 71.36%, and 74.83%. The analysis showed that there was a significant difference (p<0,05) between treatment groups torch ginger flower ethanol extract, as well as between torch ginger flower ethanol extract with DMSO 1% and chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2%. Optimum concentration of ethanol extract of torch ginger flower on P. gingivalis biofilm degradation was 25 mg/mL and showed no significant difference with chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2% (p>0,05). Conclusion: Conclusion of this research is torch ginger flower (Etlingera elatior) ethanol extract has P. gingivalis biofilm degradation activity.biofilm

Ethnobotanical knowledge of Etlingera elatior for medicinal and food uses among ethnic groups in Aceh Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 4361-4370. The tribes in Aceh Province have been using Etlingera elatior for various medicinal purposes and as a spice in their culinary. Nonetheless, detailed information on the uses of E. elatior among communities in Aceh is lacking. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the ethnobotanical knowledge among local tribes in Aceh regarding the uses of E. elatior for food and medicine. This research was conducted on eight ethnic groups in Aceh Province (i.e., Acehnese, Gayo, Alas, Aneuk Jamee, Kluet, Tamiang, Singkil, and Simeulue). The data collection was carried out by using semi-structured interviews and field observation. A total of 240 respondents (135 male and 105 female) were selected purposively to obtain local knowledge on the uses, processing techniques and modes of application of E. elatior for medicinal and food purposes. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data to determine the level of knowledge and plant parts used, both measured in fidelity level (FL). The results showed that men, elderly people and farmers had more knowledge about the uses of E. elatior as medicine and food ingredients. Traditional medicines made from this herb were used to cure coughs, sprains, postpartum and earaches. Makjun sejuk, pareng, lampok and tapal were the concoction used in traditional medicine. Stem and fruit were the most commonly used plant parts for medicinal herbs, while pounding was the most common processing technique followed by squeezing and grinding either singly or in a mixture used by drinking and rubbing. The uses of E. elatior in food were found in several local dishes with the most common use in a curry called Pliék U. Flower buds and fruit was the most commonly used part in food ingredients. Despite the unique and high uses of E. elatior among tribes in Aceh, the gap in knowledge, especially between the older and younger generations, might impact the loss of local wisdom regarding the plant.

ABSTRAK Pendahuluan: Ekstrak bunga kecombrang memiliki kandungan flavonoid yang berperan sebagai antibakteri. Flavonoid memiliki tingkat kepolaran yang tinggi sehingga dengan mudah menembus dinding sel dari bakteri Propionibacterium acnes. Ekstrak etanol bunga kecombrang di formulasikan dalam bentuk sediaan salep untuk mempermudah pemakaian. Dasar salep yang digunakan yaitu basis larut air dengan kombinasi PEG 400 dan PEG 4000. Tujuan: Untuk mengetahui hasil evaluasi fisik sediaan salep ekstrak etanol bunga kecombrang dan untuk mengetahui daya hambat salep ekstrak etanol bunga kecombrang terhadap bakteri Propionibacterium acnes. Metode: Metode eksperimental laboratorium dimulai dengan penyiapan bahan, determinasi tanaman, pembuatan simplisia, ekstraksi, pembuatan sediaan, evaluasi fisik dan uji antibakteri. Hasil: Hasil evaluasi salep ekstrak etanol bunga kecombrang (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M.Sm.) berdasarkan One Way Anova pada nilai pH memiliki perbedaan yang signifikan dengan p-value > 0,05, sedangkan pada nilai daya lekat, daya sebar dan viskositas tidak memiliki perbedaan yang signifikan dengan p-value > 0,05. Berdasarkan uji Paired T test pada nilai pH, daya sebar, daya lekat dan viskositas tidak terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara hari ke-0 dan hari ke-13. Pada pengujian daya hambat bakteri Propionibacteriun acnes diperoleh hasil pada formula 1 sebesar 4,36 mm, formula 2 sebesar 7,95 mm dan formula 3 sebesar 9,37 mm. Kesimpulan: Salep ekstrak etanol bunga kecombrang pada formula 3 tidak masuk dalam rentang pH yang baik untuk kulit, dan pada daya sebar dari ketiga formula tidak memenuhi syarat dari daya sebar yang baik untuk kulit. Salep ekstrak etanol bunga kecombrang pada bakteri Propionibacterium acnes dengan zona hambat pada formula 1 termasuk dalam kategori lemah, formula 2 dan formula 3 termasuk dalam kategori sedang.
