Typology of club drug use among young adults recruited using time–space sampling

Abstract: The present study examined patterns of recent club drug use among 400 young adults (18–29) recruited using time-space sampling in NYC. Subjects had used at least one of six club drugs (MDMA, Ketamine, GHB, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, and LSD) within the prior 3 months. We used latent class analysis (LCA) to estimate latent groups based on patterns of recent club drug use and examined differences in demographic and psychological variables by class. A 3-class model fit the data best. Patterns were: Primary cocaine… Show more

“…Following protocols adopted in past published latent class analyses (LCA) (Ramo, Grov, Delucchi, Kelly, & Parsons, 2010), three criteria were used to assess model fit. The first criterion, the Lo-Mendell-Rubin adjusted log-likelihood ratio test (LMR-ALRT) statistic (Lo, Mendell, & Rubin, 2001), was used to compare fit of a k class model with a k − 1 class model, with a low p value (b.050) indicating that the latter should be rejected in favour of the model with one additional class.…”

“…34,44,45 In the modern acute psychiatric setting, this may require special requests for assays that can detect substances of abuse that are not included in most screening toxicology panels, 51 including club drugs (such as gamma-hydroxybutyrate), dissociatives (such as dextromethorphan, ketamine), and synthetic cannabinoids ("spice," JWH-018, HU-210, CP-47,497). [52][53][54] In the absence of this capability, collateral history may be especially important.…”

“…When looking at cocaine, different patterns appear in Europe: in some countries with a high prevalence of cocaine use, the increase in use was followed by a stabilization; in other countries, the prevalence of cocaine use more than doubled but remained relatively low [3]. More recently, the use of GHB and ketamine has been reported by dance drug users [8,9]. There have been reports from the UK and Australia on an increase in the use and availability of ketamine [2,8,10,11].…”
