In this study, thin chitosan-gelatin biofilms cross-linked with dialdehyde cellulose nanocrystals for dressing materials were received. Two types of dialdehyde cellulose nanocrystals from fiber (DNCL) and microcrystalline cellulose (DAMC) were obtained by periodate oxidation. An ATR-FTIR analysis confirmed the selective oxidation of cellulose nanocrystals with the creation of a carbonyl group at 1724 cm−1. A higher degree of cross-linking was obtained in chitosan-gelatin biofilms with DNCL than with DAMC. An increasing amount of added cross-linkers resulted in a decrease in the apparent density value. The chitosan-gelatin biofilms cross-linked with DNCL exhibited a higher value of roughness parameters and antioxidant activity compared with materials cross-linked with DAMC. The cross-linking process improved the oxygen permeability and anti-inflammatory properties of both measurement series. Two samples cross-linked with DNCL achieved an ideal water vapor transition rate for wound dressings, CS-Gel with 10% and 15% addition of DNCL—8.60 and 9.60 mg/cm2/h, respectively. The swelling ability and interaction with human serum albumin (HSA) were improved for biofilms cross-linked with DAMC and DNCL. Significantly, the films cross-linked with DAMC were characterized by lower toxicity. These results confirmed that chitosan-gelatin biofilms cross-linked with DNCL and DAMC had improved properties for possible use in wound dressings.

The qualitative and quantitative component composition of low molecular weight volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of the essential oil of the floating-leaf pondweed (Potamogeton natans L., Potamogetonaceae family) growing in various lakes of the Karelian Isthmus (North-West of the Russian Federation) in the fruiting stage was investigated in detail for the first time by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The low molecular weight metabolome (LMWM) of P. natans contained 138 components, 128 of which were identified. VOCs belonging to esters, alcohols, and various functional groups dominated the LMWM of floating leaf pondweed from mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes. A significant similarity was found between the component composition of VOCs of floating leaf pondweed from mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes. Many of the substances found in the LMWM of P. natans can be attributed to biologically active compounds. This opens up prospects for the use of this plant (particularly manool and ecdysteroids from its LMWM) for various economic applications as a valuable natural raw material. Due to the characteristic of the floating leaf pondweed's substantial resistance of its LMWM to the factor of the trophic status of the lakes, it is feasible to use it as an ecological indicator of significant disruptions in aquatic environments.

Three previously unknown steroidal saponins named as govanoside C-E (1-3) along with four known compounds, govanoside B (4), protodioscin (5), 20β-hydroxyecdysone (6), and polypodine B (7) have been isolated from the rhizomes of Trillium govanianum Wall. ex D.Don. The structures of isolated compounds were elucidated by detailed analysis of 1D and 2D NMR, mass and IR spectroscopic data. Compounds 1 and 2 contained a rare sugar moiety i.e. 6-deoxy allose, while compound 3 has acetylated rhamnose moiety in its glycone part. Acid hydrolysis of new compounds followed by derivatization for GC analysis of glycone moieties was carried out for the confirmation of monomer saccharides present in each molecule. In addition, we have developed a protocol for the isolation of major steroidal saponin present in the rhizomes of Trillium govanianum i.e. borassoside E in gram scale. Parent extract, fractions and all pure molecules were screened to evaluate their antagonistic effects on acetylcholinesterase activity. Among extract and fractions, water fraction (IC50 value: 90.2 μg/ mL) was found most active whereas among pure molecules govanoside E (3) (IC50 value: 8.62 μM) was found most active against acetylcholinesterase. The molecular docking analysis was also carried out to further study the molecular interactions and binding free energy of the pure molecules with acetylcholinesterase.
