Two-Color Pyrometer for Process Temperature Measurement During Machining

Abstract: A fast fiber-optic two-color pyrometer operating on the optical communication bands is designed for temperature measurements in machining processes. Off-the-shelf low-loss fiber-optic demultiplexers and optoelectronics equipment are used in order to obtain a cost-effective sensing solution while reducing both the temperature measurement error and the minimum measurable temperature. The system is capable of measuring highly localized temperatures without using collimation lens. The designed pyrom-eter allows me… Show more

“…Additional advantages are offered by two-color pyrometers [ 15 ] dealing with the ratio of optical powers at two spectral bands to bypass the dependence of emissivity on the temperature. A wide theoretical background about detecting with two-color pyrometers is available in the literature [ 16 ].…”

“…Figure 2 shows the scheme of the setup used to measure the work piece temperature [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. The temperature sensor is made of standard glass optical fiber with core (d Core ) and cladding (d Cladding ) diameters of 62.5 and 125 μm, respectively.…”

“…In this paper, a simplified model based on a finite element (FE) approach for simulation of steady temperature distribution in turning Inconel 718 is presented. The model is calibrated with precise temperature measurements made using a special purpose device, based on a two-color fiber-optic pyrometer [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. The aim of this paper is to provide a measurement method for temperature control during the process and to provide information for the calibration of the numerical model suitable for prediction of thermal issues in Inconel cutting.…”

“…One field of application that requires precise temperature measurements, that are acquired quickly under harsh conditions, is machine tool surface temperature measurement [ 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Machining tool surface temperature measurements have often been acquired using embedded thermocouples [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ] and increasingly by infrared thermography and thermometry [ 8 , 9 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Accommodating these features necessitates an increased thermometer enclosure size and additional electronics for controlling the cooling and undertaking additional signal processing [ 30 ]. Development of an infrared thermometer that used an uncooled sensor and received the radiant signal without optical chopping, but had the capability of measuring machine tool temperatures, would advance machining tool temperature measurement [ 8 , 11 ].…”
