Turning Points in the Assessment and Clinical Applications of Individual Differences in Attachment

Abstract: Attachment may have reached a turning point in which two sometimes incompatible approaches to individual differences in attachment are being compared. The outcome could influence future work in attachment. This article focuses on individual differences because applications of attachment are predicated on the consequences of individual differences for adaptation and well-being. The issue is which model is better suited to future research and clinical applications. Both models augment the original Ainsworth ABC … Show more

“…The other method is the Dynamic-Maturational Model of Attachment and Adaptation; this method was developed together with evolving DMM theory (Crittenden, 1994(Crittenden, , 2008(Crittenden, , 2016. DMM theory began with clinical work and empirical studies of maltreating samples four decades ago (Crittenden, 1981;Crittenden, Spieker & Farnfield, 2021). The DMM classificatory method for the AAI (Crittenden & Landini, 2011) uses a developmental expansion of Ainsworth's infant categories to describe a wide array of dimensionally related protective strategies for coping with danger across the lifespan; see Figure 1.…”

“…Court reports using the DMM‐AAI follow the recommendations in the IASA Family Attachment Court Protocol (Crittenden et al ., 2013; https://www.iasa-dmm.org/index.php/family_court_protocol/plug-in-materials). Thus, with its published theory, methodology and validity studies (Crittenden, Spieker, & Farnfield, 2021), the authors contend that the DMM‐AAI meets the established evidentiary standards of several countries, including the UK and USA.…”

“…Familiarity with the strategies and how individuals can enact each strategy can help professionals identify protective and comforting behaviour patterns. Many studies describe the strategies common to various forms of mental illness, child maltreatment and criminality (Crittenden et al, 2021).…”

“…Four decades of published clinical cases, group descriptive studies and comparative studies have yielded general functional formulations for many symptom presentations and guidelines for generating family functional formulations for each specific family. Crittenden et al (2021) provide synopses of this work for many mental health, child protection and forensic problems. Notably, the treatment plans included innovative customised services to meet individual needs, rather than limiting the plans to existing services.…”

“…P arental attachment provides essential information for family court decision-making regarding service plans and child placement. Specifically, parental attachment can help professionals to estimate parents' child-protective behaviour and readiness to change their behaviour; for an explanation of these ideas, see the accompanying paper by Crittenden et al (2021c).…”
