Tunable superconducting nanoinductors

Abstract: We characterize inductors fabricated from ultra-thin, approximately 100 nm wide strips of niobium (Nb) and niobium nitride (NbN). These nanowires have a large kinetic inductance in the superconducting state. The kinetic inductance scales linearly with the nanowire length, with a typical value of 1 nH µm(-1) for NbN and 44 pH µm(-1) for Nb at a temperature of 2.5 K. We measure the temperature and current dependence of the kinetic inductance and compare our results to theoretical predictions. We also simulate th… Show more

“…Unlike the geometric inductance L g that is associated with the magnetic field of the ring, the kinetic inductance L k ¼ m 0 l 2 l/wh (m 0 is the vacuum permeability and l the length of the loop) stems from the motion of the Cooper pairs. Kinetic inductance becomes nonlinear with respect to shielding current I s as the kinetic energy approaches the depairing energy of the Cooper pairs 16,23 . With sufficiently small I s , the nonlinearity assumes a form…”

“…The external detection electronics would then be similar to that proposed by Divochiy et al [13]. To determine the detection area we provide an example of relatively standard dimensions for NbN nanowire detectors [9,10,12,14,15,16]. The device shown in figure (2) has six pixels in each arm and 6 arms.…”

“…The characteristics of nanowire detectors have been studied in depth elsewhere [9,10,11,12,14,15,16,17,19]. We will not repeat this fundamental work but will instead characterize the unique qualities of this device.…”
