Abstract:The most important mechanism for protein degradation and muscle wasting on cellular level is the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). This system is activated in a uraemic milieu because of its hormonal changes, metabolic acidosis, low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance, which are associated with a worsening renal function from an early stage. Diabetic uraemic patients have a higher prevalence and more advanced forms of uraemic sarcopenia. Physical inactivity promotes degradation of muscle proteins on a c… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
