Macrofungi production and economic value have been increasing globally. The demand for macrofungi has expanded rapidly owing to their popularity among consumers, pleasant taste, and unique flavors. The presence of high quality proteins, polysaccharides, unsaturated fatty acids, minerals, triterpene sterols, and secondary metabolites makes macrofungi an important commodity. Macrofungi are well known for their ability to protect from or cure various health problems, such as immunodeficiency, cancer, inflammation, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity. Many studies have demonstrated their medicinal properties, supported by both in vivo and in vitro experimental studies, as well as clinical trials. Numerous bioactive compounds isolated from mushrooms, such as polysaccharides, proteins, fats, phenolic compounds, and vitamins, possess strong bioactivities. Consequently, they can be considered as an important source of nutraceuticals. Numerous edible mushrooms have been studied for their bioactivities, but only a few species have made it to the market. Many species remain to be explored. The converging trends and popularity of eastern herbal medicines, natural/organic food product preference, gut-healthy products, and positive outlook towards sports nutrition are supporting the growth in the medicinal mushroom market. The consumption of medicinal mushrooms as functional food or dietary supplement is expected to markedly increase in the future. The global medicinal mushroom market size is projected to increase by USD 13.88 billion from 2018 to 2022. The global market values of promising bioactive compounds, such as lentinan and lovastatin, are also expected to rise. With such a market growth, mushroom nutraceuticals hold to be very promising in the years to come.

Aims:The need for antimicrobial agents that could prevent the invasive spread of microbes that infect burn wounds directs the aim of the study. The edible mushroom Calocybe indica, with well-known biological activities, is explored to understand the role of the three bacteria, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalis and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, which are prevalent among the burn wounds, known for their tissue invasive properties and multidrug resistance. Methodology and results:The aqueous extract of C. indica was screened for antibacterial activity against the test microbes. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the antibacterial aqueous extract were determined. The effect of the extract on the specific activity of the tissue-degrading enzymes protease and hyaluronidase was studied. The MIC of C. indica aqueous extract against the test organisms was found to be 125, 62.5 and 62.5 µg for S. pyogenes, S. maltophilia and E. faecalis, respectively. The specific activity of protease was reduced by 6, 1.3 and 3 folds, and hyaluronidase was reduced by 4.5, 2.8 and 4.1, respectively, in the order of test microbes mentioned above. Conclusion, significance and impact of study:The C. indica aqueous extracts with the potential to inhibit growth and retard invasive enzyme production in the microbes infecting burn wounds could be a significant therapeutic strategy in the management of clinical burn wounds to prevent the progression of the tissue damage. The bioactive component of the extract could further be identified analytically and formulated efficiently to enhance therapeutic applications.

Fungi are a diverse group, and they are essential for health, the economy, and food. Interest in these organisms has increased because of the importance and effect of their chemical components viz., phenolic compounds, which are considered an alternative source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are compounds that prevent cell damage and can help prevent or counteract certain diseases (cardiovascular, neurodegen-erative, cancer, etc.) because they can improve cell function (changes in enzyme activity, enzyme patterns, membrane fluidity, and responses to stimuli), among others. To date, no adverse side effects have been reported. The difference in production is due to several factors, such as the growth environment, nutrition, cell age, the part from where the phenolic compounds are obtained (pileus, stipe, or mycelium), the extraction method, etc. This article aims to provide an overview of wild edible mushrooms, to promote the study of their antioxidant capacity, and to better understand the nutraceutical potential of edible mushrooms consumed in different parts of the world.
