Equilibrium sampling devices can be applied to study and monitor the exposure and fate of hydrophobic organic chemicals on a thermodynamic basis. They can be used to determine freely dissolved concentrations and chemical activity ratios and to predict equilibrium partitioning concentrations of hydrophobic organic chemicals in biota lipids. The authors' aim was to assess the equilibrium status of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a contaminated lake ecosystem and along its discharge course using equilibrium sampling devices for measurements in sediment and water and by also analyzing biota. The authors used equilibrium sampling devices (silicone rubber and polyethylene [PE]) to determine freely dissolved concentrations and chemical activities of PCBs in the water column and sediment porewater and calculated for both phases the corresponding equilibrium concentrations and chemical activities in model lipids. Overall, the studied ecosystem appeared to be in disequilibrium for the studied phases: sediment, water, and biota. Chemical activities of PCBs were higher in sediment than in water, which implies that the sediment functioned as a partitioning source of PCBs and that net diffusion occurred from the sediment to the water column. Measured lipid‐normalized PCB concentrations in biota were generally below equilibrium lipid concentrations relative to the sediment (CLip⇌Sed) or water (CLip⇌W), indicating that PCB levels in the organisms were below the maximum partitioning levels. The present study shows the application versatility of equilibrium sampling devices in the field and facilitates a thermodynamic understanding of exposure and fate of PCBs in a contaminated lake and its discharge course. Wildfires burn approximately 1% of boreal forest yearly, being one of the most significant factors affecting soil organic matter (SOM) pools. Boreal forests are largely situated in the permafrost zone, which contains half of global soil carbon (C). Wildfires advance thawing of permafrost by burning the insulating organic layer and decreasing surface albedo, thus increasing soil temperatures. Fires also affect SOM quality through chemical and physical changes, such as the formation of resistant C compounds. The long-term post-fire effects on SOM quality, degradability and isotopic composition are not well known in permafrost forests. We studied the effect of forest fires on the proportional sizes of SOM pools with chemical fractionation (extracting with water, ethanol and acid) of soil samples (5, 30 and 50 cm depths) collected from a fire chronosequence in the upland mineral soils of the Canadian permafrost zone. We also determined the 13 C and 15 N isotopic composition of soil after fire. In the topsoil horizon (5 cm) recent fire areas contained a smaller fraction of labile SOM and were slightly more enriched with 15 N and 13 C than older fire areas. The SOM fraction ratios reverted towards pre-fire status with succession. Changes in SOM were less apparent deeper in the soil. Best predictors for the size of recalcitrant SOM

Contaminant remediation decisions often focus on sediment–organism relationships, omitting the partitioning between sediment and water that exists across a given site. The present study highlights the importance of incorporating nonsedimentary routes of exposure into a nonequilibrium, steady‐state food web bioaccumulation model for predicting polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations in benthic invertebrates. Specifically, we examined the proportion of overlying water relative to the sediment porewater respired by benthic invertebrates, which has been used in previous studies to examine contaminant bioaccumulation. We evaluated the model accuracy using paired benthos–sediment samples and an extensive fish contamination database to ensure realistic predictions at the base of the Detroit River (Ontario, Canada, and Michigan, USA) food web. The results demonstrate that, compared with empirical regression analyses, the food web bioaccumulation model provided satisfactory estimates of PCB bioaccumulation for benthos simulations and better estimates for fish simulations. Our results showed that PCB bioaccumulation measurements are significantly affected by variations in pollutant uptake and elimination routes via the overlying water, which in turn are affected by the degree of disequilibrium of PCBs between sediments and water. Interestingly, we obtained contrasting results regarding the effectiveness of remediation strategies for reducing the contaminant burden of the aquatic biota based on different proportions of overlying water relative to porewater. These differences could consequently impact decisions about the approaches for source control and strategic sediment remediation. This study suggests that bioaccumulation assessments could be improved through better identification of chemical uptake–elimination routes in benthos and by accounting for chemical bioavailability in sediment and water components in areas with disequilibrium.Integr Environ Assess Manag 2019;00:000–000. © 2019 SETAC
