Trigonal bipyramidal magnetic molecules based on [MoIII(CN)6]3−

Abstract: The trigonal bipyramidal molecules [M(tmphen)(2)](3)[Mo(CN)(6)](2).(solvent) (M = Co, Ni; tmphen = 3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) based on the [Mo(III)(CN)(6)](3-) unit were prepared by loss of a cyanide ligand from [Mo(III)(CN)(7)](4-) and found to exhibit ferromagnetic interactions between the M(II) and Mo(III) centers.

“…As we understood, this compound was used as a precursor for the synthesis of pentanuclear bimetallic clusters. However, in the synthetic details, this precursor appeared to be (18-crown-6-K) 4 Mo(CN) 7 , [11] and no crystallographic data of the corresponding complex is available. Miyasaka [12] also used (K@18-crown-6) 3 [M(CN) 6 ] (M = Fe 3+ ) as starting material, but no corresponding structural information was reported.…”

“…Many hexa-coordinated metal complexes exhibit magnetic anisotropies [4,12,22,[108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122] and a few recent studies have demonstrated possible SMM-type behavior by the mono-nuclear complexes. It should be recalled that the first reported SMM was a polynuclear complex that incorporated hexa-coordinated Mn II/III ions in a slightly distorted O h geometry [123][124][125][126].…”

“…It was not until 2009, however, that a polynuclear complex based on this cyanometallate was reported. 93 The molecule [V II (PY5Me 94 The molecules exhibit a trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) structure with two axial Unlike the [Mo III (CN) 6 ] 3À anion which was only recently prepared, the existence of the [Ru III (CN) 6 ] 3À anion was documented nearly sixty years ago. 95,96 The salts (Et 4 N) 3 [Ru III (CN) 6 ] 97 and ( n Bu 4 N) 3 [Ru III (CN) 6 ] 98 have been synthesized in nonaqueous solution and in 2003 the compound (Ph 4 As) 3 [Ru III (CN) 6 ]Á 2H 2 O was reported to be prepared in water and its crystal structure and magnetic properties investigated.…”
