is an emerging zoophilic dermatophyte that mainly infects skin and scalp and has been reported in Asia, America and Europe. It has two phenotypic variants: one with white colonies and the other with yellow colonies. Morphological identification of is not sufficient and can be confused with or . Genomic or proteomic analysis is required to establish a definitive identification. We present three dermatophyte strains obtained from the skin, nails and scalp of human infections in which macroscopic and microscopic examinations were not sufficient to identify the species. The final identification of was performed using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. This is the first report of in Peru.

A 4-year-old patient who attended the pediatric clinic for presenting a 2-week-old skin lesion in the periorbital region with an erythematous-scaly appearance. Initially, he received treatment with topical corticosteroids and antibiotics. One week later, in the absence of improvement and the appearance of an erythematous border with a clear center, a fungal infection is suspected, and the family confirms contact with a domestic guinea pig, for which a smear of the lesion is performed and the treatment regimen is modified to topic clotrimazole. Two weeks later, growth of T. benhamiae was confirmed, for which reason the treatment was modified, starting oral and topical terbinafine for 6 weeks, with resolution of the lesion. Importance of the case: Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum canis are the fungi that most frequently cause dermatophytosis. The dermatophyte detected in the lesion of this case, T. benhamiae, although less common, has an increasing prevalence in our environment, and requires prolonged treatment and follow-up.
