Trichinella spp. in wild mesocarnivores in an endemic setting

Abstract: Human trichinellosis and Trichinella infection in pigs are both still endemic in the Balkans, including Serbia. Because of the flow between the sylvatic and the domestic cycle of Trichinella spp., monitoring wildlife has been recommended for the risk assessment of Trichinella spp. infection in swine. We have previously shown the presence of Trichinella infection in wild carnivores including the wolf and the golden jackal, and here we report on Trichinella infection in several other mesocarnivore species. “…These values are lower than we observed in the Primorsky Krai. In the closely related species Meles meles Linnaeus, 1758, inhabiting Europe, the prevalence of this parasite also varied in different regions, for example, from 6.2% in the Balkans (Klun et al, 2019) and up to 25% in the central part of Russia (Andreyanov, 2014).…”

“…Trichinosis is a widespread natural focal disease dangerous to humans (Campbell, 1983;Murrell, 2001;Pozio, 2005). In the wild, invasion circulates among carnivorans, primarily representatives of the order Carnivora (Britov, 1995;Skírnisson et al, 2010;Klun et al, 2019).…”

“…So far, surveillance and monitoring of Trichinella spp. in domestic (pigs and dogs) and wild animals (wild boar, Sus scrofa; red foxes, Vulpes vulpes; golden jackals, Canis aureus and; wolves, Canis lupus) was carried out in some endemic districts in Serbia (Klun et al, 2019;Dmitrić et al, 2017;Ćirović et al, 2015;Teodorović et al, 2014;Zivojinovic, 2013;Zivojinovic et al, 2010;Zivojinovic et al, 2009). An investigation was also focused on the transmission pathways of Trichinella species (Živojinovic et al, 2015).…”

“…At present, there are 10 recognized species of Trichinella around the world and three additional genotypes that have not yet been identified as distinct species ( Korhonen et al, 2016 ; Sharma et al, 2020 ). Most species infect only mammals ( Klun et al, 2019 ; Bilska-Zając et al, 2020 ), including marine mammals ( Tryland et al, 2014 ; Pasqualetti et al, 2018 ). However, Trichinella pseudospiralis Garkavi, 1972 also infects birds, and Trichinella zimbabwensis Pozio et al, 2002 and Trichinella papuae Pozio et al, 1999 infect reptile hosts ( Korhonen et al, 2016 ).…”
