Tribological Behavior and Microstructural Analysis of Atmospheric Plasma Spray Deposited Thin Coatings on Cardan Cross Spindles

Abstract: Cardan joints are used in transmissions between misaligned shafts, as in all-wheel-drive (AWD) cars and railway applications. Their functioning is accompanied by heavy cyclical loads, with the cardan cross spindles subjected to intensive abrasive wear and pitting. In this paper, a solution to the mentioned issue is proposed, thin anti-wear coatings of Metco 32 and Metco 72 metallic powders deposited by atmospheric plasma spray (APS) on cylindrical samples cut from spindles of two cardan crosses made of 40Cr10 … Show more

“…The wear rate of the coating was significantly reduced by 90% and 77% at room temperature and high temperature, respectively. Munteanu et al [19] deposited thin wear-resistant coatings of 20 (Ni17.5Cr4Fe4Si4B 0.5C), 80 (WC12Co), and 88WC12Co metal powders through atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). Sun et al [20] synthesized WCoB/WNiB phases in situ by the reaction of WB with Co/Ni, and a series of novel WB-WCoB coatings were prepared by controlling the content of the metal phases.…”

“…Copper alloy joint bearings on another hand also experience restricted promotion and application due to the run-in of pairing auxiliary and embedability of impurity mix [4]. The observed defects coupled with rapid advancement in fourth revolution industrial machinery and technologies in recent times have necessitated and stirred up immense research among industry practitioners and researchers into new joint bearing substrate materials with lightweight, good wear resistance and high bearing capacity [5,6]. In this regard therefore, extant experimental and numerical simulation studies have focused investigating the friction, wear and tear characteristics and stress distribution of various types of self-lubricating joint bearings due to their self-tuning, maintenance exemption, long life and large carrying capacities.…”
