Trends of Breast Cancer Incidence in Iran During 2004-2008: A Bayesian Space-time Model

Abstract: Background: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and estimating its relative risks and trends of incidence at the area-level is helpful for health policy makers. However, traditional methods of estimation which do not take spatial heterogeneity into account suffer from drawbacks and their results may be misleading, as the estimated maps of incidence vary dramatically in neighboring areas. Spatial methods have been proposed to overcome drawbacks of traditional methods by including spat… Show more

“…These results are similar to previous reported results (Mahaki et al, 2011;Jafari-Koshki et al, 2014). Also due to Hadad khoshkar et al study in model without adjustment for risk factors, the highest incidence was for the provinces of Isfahan, Yazd and Tehran and the lowest incidence was for the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari.…”

“…In England breast cancer occurs from 50-64 years in the US their range is 60 years and older (NCI). In contrast studies show that breast cancer influences Iranian women at least one decade younger than women in developed countries, 1 and the most prevalent age is 47 years (Montazeri, 2008;Jafari-Koshki, 2014), and it is the five most common cancers and the first among cancers diagnosed in women. Even though the prevalence of breast cancer in Iran is still partly low (about 23 per 100,000), the number of patients with recently diagnosed breast cancer is rising (KhazaeePool, 2014).…”

“…As shown by the trend plots in Figure 4, the Central LHIN had the lowest temporal trend whereas, the South East LHIN had the highest temporal trend. The temporal trend provides insight on the relative speed of cancer risk progression in the various areal units [57]. Since the South East LHIN had the highest trend, this implies that the risk for this area progressed the fastest in comparison to both the overall mean trend, as well as the local trends of all other LHINs.…”
