Trends in Antifungal Susceptibility of Candida Species – One Year Observation

Abstract: In the past years opportunistic fungal infections have seriously increased, mainly in immunocompromised patients. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of yeast-like fungi in invasive candidiasis and to estimate its susceptibility to chosen antifungal agents. One hundred and sixty strains of yeast-like fungi were cultured from various clinical material: samples from lower respiratory tract, blood, the peritoneal cavity and others. The susceptibility tests were established according to the quanti… Show more

“…Referring to IT and FL activities, the present study showed higher R overall in the evaluated species compared with other antifungals. In fact, a previous study that evaluated 160 strains of yeast-like fungi cultured from samples from the lower respiratory tract, blood, peritoneal cavity and other areas showed more R to IT in Candida species using the Etest (23). Another study investigating 159 clinical isolates of Candida species from patients with invasive candidiasis in a Kuala Lumpur hospital revealed six isolates R to FL, comprising two isolates of C.albicans, two of C. parapsilosis, one C. tropicalis and one C. glabrata; all of these isolates showed cross-resistance to IT (24).…”

“…All of the 29 and 93 examined Candida isolates were susceptible to echinocandins. Another two reports from 2012 and 2014 had shown that there were no resistant Candida isolates within the 10 and 150 specimens collected in the Polish hospitals (Kurnatowska et al, 2012;Gołaś et al, 2014). The latest echinocandin susceptibility testing was performed with E-tests in 2017.…”

“…The distribution of C. glabrata and C. parapsilosis was at 14.1% and 13.1%, and there was no statistically significant differences between the departments (Nawrot et al, 2013). The results, published in 2008The results, published in , 2012The results, published in , 2014The results, published in and 2017 shown that according to the results of E-tests there were no any non-Candida isolates resistant to caspofungin and micafungin (Szymankiewicz & Dancewicz, 2008;Wieczorek et al, 2008;Kurnatowska et al, 2012;Gołaś et al, 2014;Sulik-Tyszka et al, 2017).…”
