Treatment of uncertainty through the interval smart/swing weighting method: a case study

Decision making in material selection plays important role in selecting appropriate material based on design and manufacturing attributes. Proposing a new material is always a challenging task so the researchers used Decision making assistance tools. In the Present paper the application of Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) methods are applied to the piston material selection for optimal design process. Comparative study of subjective and objective criteria weights on selected MADM methods are done. Sensitivity analysis is conducted to prove the consistency in performance score ranking order as the criteria weights for each alternative varies.

<p>In 2013, oil companies in Alberta, Canada invested $32 billion in new oil-sands projects. Despite the size of this investment, there is a demonstrable deficiency in the uniformity and understanding of environmental legislation requirements that translate into increased project compliance risks. In this paper, we applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to develop a priority list of environmental regulatory compliance risk criteria for oil-sands projects. AHP belongs to the family of multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques that utilizes a pairwise comparison matrix solicited from subject matter experts (SMEs) in the field as input. The overall methodology itself consisted of 4 phases: (1) identification of the initial list of N potential environmental compliance risk criteria and verification of these criteria via a pilot survey; (2) formation of a pairwise comparison survey in the form of an N(N-1)/2 comparison matrix based on the verified criteria; (3) administration of the pairwise comparison matrix to a sample of 16 industry-specific SME’s; and (4) the application of the AHP method using SuperDecisions as a tool on the collected sample to rank the identified risk criteria. Our demonstrated results can potentially inform Alberta oil sands industry leaders about the ranking and utility of specific compliance risks as understood by experts and enable a more focused environmental compliance action to help increase legislative and public trust.</p>

Strategic decisions in transport: a case study for a naval base selection in Brazil

A decision on a military strategic environment, such as the selection of a new naval base, is a complex process and involves various criteria. In this context, few studies are available on the problems of military-naval transport decisions. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present a maritime transport case study using a multi-methodology framework in a process of strategic decision making in logistics. Through a review of the literature, normative documents from the Brazilian armed forces, and interviews with military officers, criteria and preferences were identified and a hierarchical structure was constructed for a case study in the Brazilian Navy-the location of the second Fleet Headquarters. The results indicated that São Marcos Bay, in Maranhão State, was the best location among the alternatives. The multi-criteria approach was shown to be a valuable tool in assisting the decision making process and to understand the trade-offs between strategic and operational criteria in a transport decision.Resumo: Decisões em um ambiente estratégico-militar, como a seleção de uma nova base naval, são processos complexos e que envolvem diversos critérios. Neste contexto, poucos estudos estão disponíveis sobre o problema de tomada decisão em transporte militar-naval. Portanto, o objetivo deste artigo é apresentar um estudo de caso utilizando um método multicritério em um processo de tomada de decisão estratégico-militar em logística. Por meio da revisão da literatura, de documentos normativos das Forças Armadas e de entrevistas com militares, foram identificados os critérios, as preferências e foi construída a estrutura hierárquica para um caso real da Marinha do Brasil, na localização da segunda sede da Esquadra na costa Norte e Nordeste brasileira. O resultado indicou que a Baía de São Marcos, no Maranhão, é a melhor localização entre as alternativas consideradas. O método multicritério demostrou ser uma ferramenta válida para auxiliar no processo decisório e para entender as compensações entre os critérios estratégicos e operacionais em uma decisão de transporte.Palavras-chave: seleção de portos; transporte marítimo; análise de decisão; MCDA; marinha do brasil.
