“…Although the majority of BMT investigations do not report data on consumers' satisfaction with BMT, the findings of a small number of studies suggest that couples rate the treatment positively and continue with the intervention. For example, Hahlweg et al (1982) reported that 91% of couples saw the therapy as a "worthwhile experience," and 94% would recommend the treatment to a friend. Dropout rates also appear to be low.…”

“…Applying these criteria, Jacobson, Follette, Revenstorf, Baucom et al (1984) explored the clinically significant changes experienced by couples receiving BMT in three large outcome investigations conducted by three different investigators (Baucom, 1982;Hahlweg, Revenstorf, & Schindler, 1982;Jacobson, 1984). They found that 56% of couples receiving BMT improved at posttest beyond measurement error and that 35% of the treated couples were no longer distressed at posttest; only 13.5% of waiting list couples demonstrated reliable improvement.…”

“…Couples were recruited, as part of a larger comparative study (see Hahlweg et al, 1982), through public service announcements on the Bavarian radio station offering treatment for distressed couples (70% of clients) and referrals from mental health agencies and individual clinicians (30% of clients). Clients were accepted for the study when both partners agreed to participate and met the characteristics of 75% of clients who apply for counseling at German marriage guidance clinics (age: 25-40 years; duration of marriage: 1-10 years; middle class).…”
