Treatment of Low-flow Vascular Malformations by Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy with Polidocanol Foam: 24 Cases and Literature Review

Abstract: Treatment by ultrasound-guided sclerosis using polidocanol foam seems to be well tolerated and can improve the symptoms of low-flow malformations without the risks of more aggressive sclerosing agents, such as ethanol.

“…In consequence, invasive treatment is indicated to relief patients from discomfort, which is primarily pain [4]. Some forms of VM, for instance when involving the airways or with articular involvement, disfi gurement, and gastro-intestinal bleeding, need treatment even in the absence of pain [5][6][7]. Venous malformations are also often part of complex or combined vascular syndromes [8].…”

“…Surgery has partially lost its central role in the management of the Infantile Hemangiomas in favour of local, systemic therapies or lasers in dangerous areas. [8][9][10][11][12][13] However 14 The surgical way often requires some complementary treatments, to maximize the final results in a multidisciplinary approach. 15 The correct diagnosis and classification of the type of malformation we are facing, do indicate the therapeutic option among a wide range of possibility.…”

“…Some lesions in the limbs and trunk may lead to the formation of thrombus, pain, and dysfunction because of the slow bloodstream. Polidocanol is widely reported to be a therapy for venous malformations (Blaise et al, 2011;Yamaki et al, 2008). In the treatment of venous malformations, the standard of care is a multidisciplinary approach including the use of traditional surgical therapy, if applicable, and endovascular treatments (Lee, Laredo, Kim, & Neville, 2007).…”
