Treatment for superficial thrombophlebitis of the leg

Abstract

Research of clinical guidelines (CG), computer decision support systems (CS), systematic reviews (SR) and original studies (January 2008 to May 2011). MeSH terms: venous thrombosis; heparin, low-molecular-weight; antiinflammatory agents. American Family Physician's Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) was used to assess the level of evidence. Data sources: Pubmed database, evidence-based medicine websites, General Directorate of Health, Portuguese Association of General Practitioners, MGFamiliar.net, Index of Portuguese Medical Magazines.

Variability in the Management of Superficial Venous Thrombophlebitis Among Phlebologists and Vascular Surgeons

“…Fondaparinux over 6 weeks was associated with a significant reduction in symptomatic VTE, SVT extension, and recurrence of SVT while both LMWH and NSAIDs reduced the incidence of extension or recurrence of SVT but had no significant effect on symptomatic VTE. 1 The methodological quality of most of the trials was poor; however, this review did demonstrate differences in patient outcomes with varying approaches. These findings suggest that a consensus driven, evidence-based algorithm for the management of SVT is warranted to ensure optimum patient outcomes regardless of whether the primary practitioner is a phlebologist or vascular surgeon.…”
