“…Given 38 the average thickness of the human retina ͑350-500 m͒, the RPE ͑20 m͒, and the choroid ͑100 to 200 m͒, the 0.25-mm spatial resolution in our MRT implementation is sufficient to provide two or three temperature measurement points through the combined thickness of the retina and choroid layers, although it is insufficient to distinguish retinal and RPE temperature. Nevertheless, the currently achievable resolution supports the application of MRT to monitor the heating of the target vascular membrane, as well as surrounding retina and RPE, during treatment of choroidal neovascularization [11][12][13] by TTT. A current limitation of TTT is that the target temperature required for the optimal therapeutic effect has not been established.…”

“…1 Initially used for the treatment of choroidal melanoma, 2 TTT is a technique in which heat is delivered to the choroid and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) through the pupil, with a modified laser diode (usually 810 nm) delivered from the ophthalmic slit lamp. Reichel et al 3 reported that 94% of CNV showed clinical or angiographic improvement, and vision was stabilized or improved in 75%.…”

“…Transpupillary thermotherapy may utilize mechanisms similar to those of conventional laser, thermal obliteration of vasculature and RPE migration, transformation and proliferation, but intravascular thrombosis, thermal inhibition of angiogenesis or neovascular apoptosis have also been proposed 62 . Near‐infrared irradiation is well‐suited for use in the treatment of macular disease because it has high tissue penetration and minimal ocular media absorption 63 . In addition, it is poorly absorbed by haemoglobin and xanthophyll, allowing transmission through preretinal and subretinal haemorrhage and reducing nerve fibre layer damage 63 .…”
