BackgroundThe study of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important topic in mental health around the globe. However, there is the need for more evidence about the cumulative influence of psychological variables on HRQOL. The main aim of the study was to evaluate how specific personality traits might explain scores in HRQOL and to explore how this relationship might be mediated by coping styles and psychological distress.MethodsYoung Colombian subjects (N = 274) were included (mean age: 21.3; SD = 3.8). The Short-Form Health Survey was used to measure HRQOL. For assessment of psychological variables, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations and the short version of Big Five Inventory were used.ResultsThe personality trait that was the best predictor of HRQOL was openness to experience, forming an explanatory model for HRQOL, along with emotional coping style and depressive and anxious symptoms. Emotional coping style and psychological distress were significant mediators of the relationship between openness and HRQOL.ConclusionsOur findings provide additional data about the cumulative influence of specific psychological variables on HRQOL, in a mostly young female Latin American sample.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1186/s12991-018-0196-0) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

Introduction Measuring health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) is crucial to monitor and improve the patients' health status through effective rehabilitation. While the 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12) was developed as a shorter alternative to the 36-item short-form health survey for assessing HRQOL in large-scale studies, to date, no cross-culturally adapted and validated Hausa version exists. This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt the SF-12 into Hausa language, and test its psychometric properties in mixed urban and rural Nigerian populations with chronic LBP. Methods The Hausa version of the SF-12 was developed following the guidelines of the International Quality of Life Assessment project. Fifteen patients with chronic LBP recruited from urban and rural communities of Nigeria pre-tested the Hausa SF-12. A consecutive sample of 200 patients with chronic LBP recruited from urban and rural clinics of Nigeria completed the instrument, among which 100 respondents re-tested the instrument after two weeks. Factorial structure and invariance were assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and multi-group CFA respectively. Multi-trait scaling analysis (for convergent and divergent validity) and known-groups validity were performed to assess construct validity. Composite reliability (CR), internal consistency (Cronbach's α), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), and Bland-Altman plots were computed to assess reliability.

Study design Cross-sectional analysis of a mixed retrospective and prospective inception cohort study. Objectives To determine health status, quality of life and socioeconomic situation of people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) 6 years after discharge from a hospital in Bangladesh. Setting Bangladesh. Methods All patients alive 6 years after discharge from a hospital in Bangladesh were interviewed using the SF12 health survey, the SCI Secondary Conditions Scale, the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD), and the participation in society items of World Health Organisation Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0). Additional questions determined participants' socioeconomic and employment status. Results The cohort comprised 260 participants: 145 used wheelchairs for mobility and 115 were able to walk at discharge. The median (IQR) Mental and Physical Component scores for the SF12 were 54 (49-57) and 44 (40-51) points, respectively. The median scores for the SCI Secondary Conditions Scale, CESD and WHODAS 2.0 were 8 (4-13), 7 (4-13) and 12 (6-17) points, respectively. Fourteen percent of all participants and 23% of those who used wheelchairs had a pressure ulcer at the time of interview. Forty-four percent of participants were unemployed and 65% were living below the poverty line (median (IQR) income, USD 0 (0-91)) per month. Conclusion Many people with SCI in Bangladesh are unemployed and living in poverty with a reduced quality of life and participation. Pressure ulcers are a common complication.
