Abstract: Introduction: Children with atypical development often present behavior problems that impair their psychosocial adaptation. Objective: To describe the cultural adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01), as well as preliminary indicators of instrument reliability and validity. Methods: The process involved translation, back-translation, and cultural adaptation of the instrument. Psychometric properties (reliability and validity) were assessed comparing scores obtained with t… Show more

“…In addition, the hypothesized three-factor model was also confirmed by CFA for the Chinese translation version BPI-01. This is in consistent with the English BPI-01 (Rojahn et al, 2012b) as well as with other translations of the BPI-01 (e.g., Baraldi et al, 2013;Dumont et al, 2014;Mircea et al, 2010). This supports the notion that the behavior problems manifested by individuals with ID are universal not sensitive to cultural differences.…”

“…The BPI-01 has been successfully used in several studies and has been shown to have good psychometric properties with fair to excellent internal consistency and good validity as tested by confirmatory factor analysis and discriminant factor analysis (Rojahn et al, 2012b). In addition, the instrument has been translated into many different languages and the foreign language versions have also been proven to have good reliability and validity (e.g., Baraldi, Rojahn, Seabra, Carreiro, & Teixeira, 2013;Dumont, Kroes, Korzilius, Didden, & Rojahn, 2014;Mircea, Rojahn, & Esbensen, 2010).…”

“…On the other hand, a recent study has reported the correlations between the BPI-01 and the K-CBCL subscales to be low to moderate. 18) The differences in the results can be attributed to a number of factors. First, there may be differences in the types of symptoms to which each scale might be sensitive.…”

“…Lastly, the majority of our sample consisted of IDD and ASD, which was quite different from the previous study based predominantly on IDD patients. 18) Compared to presently available instruments, the BPI-01 has a distinct advantage of being shorter but comprehensive enough to sufficiently address the characteristic problematic behaviors of IDD and ASD children. Also, the BPI-01 is approved by the original author to be made available for noncommercial use unlike the K-SIB-R and K-CBCL.…”

“…Behavior Problems Inventory-01 (BPI-01) (17,18) : an inventory of specific behavioral problems associated with intellectual disability in people of all ages and levels of functioning. It evaluates different types of behavioral problems according to patterns of stereotypy, auto-aggression and aggressive/destructive behavior; e. Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales: The scale assesses adaptive behavior in six areas: communication (expressive, receptive and read/write); daily living skills (personal, domestic and community); socialization (interpersonal relationships, play and leisure time, coping skills); motor skills (gross and fine); adaptive behavior and inappropriate behavior (19) ; f. Columbia Mental Maturity Scale (CMMS): It is an individually administered instrument designed to assess the general reasoning ability of children among the ages of 3 years, 6 months to 9 years, 11 months.…”
