Transient Electronic Structure and Melting of a Charge Density Wave in TbTe 3

Abstract: Obtaining insight into microscopic cooperative effects is a fascinating topic in condensed matter research because, through self-coordination and collectivity, they can lead to instabilities with macroscopic impacts like phase transitions. We used femtosecond time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (trARPES) to optically pump and probe TbTe3, an excellent model system with which to study these effects. We drove a transient charge density wave melting, excited collective vibrations in TbTe3, and obs… Show more

“…2a,b). This is the region in which the primary structural component of the CDW in 1T-TaS 2 can be probed, as confirmed by the vibrational timescale of the spectral response and consistent with the delayed response seen in paradigmatic CDW systems 35,50 . In a recent time-resolved ARPES study of 1T-TaS 2 (ref.…”

“…We now set out to answer these questions by time-resolved pump-probe ARPES [16][17][18][19]35,36 using a highharmonic-generation source 37,38 . The central idea is that the timescale on which electronic order in momentum space melts should provide a strong hint as to its predominant nature or origin.…”

“…As has recently been demonstrated 15 in the topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 , time-and angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy (Tr-ARPES) is a key tool that can achieve this. Characteristic signatures of Floquet-Bloch states in the Tr-ARPES spectra include replicas of the original band structure that are separated by the driving photon energy 15 .In addition to Floquet-Bloch states, light can also generate other coherent phenomena in solids [16][17][18] . In particular, it can dress freeelectron states near the surface of a solid (Fig.…”
