However, net Cl -fluxes are also higher than net Na + fluxes across the intestine of fresh water-acclimated flounder Platichthys flesus (Smith et al, 1975) and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Nonnotte et al, 1987), both of which can actively absorb Cl -at the gills, so this suggestion is uncertain. Furthermore, a recent review (Marshall and Grosell, 2005) has noted that an excess of Cl -over Na + absorption across the intestine is the normal pattern for a variety of marine species.…”
