The research about the determinants of performance keeps on being educational and social interest. The relationship between emotional intelligence and aptitudes in academic performance is not sufficiently demonstrated, as we do not have conclusive data about the differences of gender in these variables. We also should take into account that we keep finding contradictory data in our literature reviews. In our study we will try to bring some clarity to this issue. Our purpose was on the one hand, to determine whether there are differences by gender in emotional intelligence, aptitudes and mathematical performance and, on the other hand, check if there is a relationship between the emotional intelligence aptitudes and the mathematical performance, and finally, we wanted to determine if the emotional intelligence and aptitudes are predictive variables of the performance in mathematics in students of 6th year of primary education. The sample was made up of a total of 34 students (38% girls and 62% boys) of this educational stage, with an average age of 11.5 years. The instruments used were: TMMS-24, BADyG-E3 and qualification lists in the subject of mathematics. Data collection was performed during the class in 4 sessions of about one hour. Descriptive, correlational and predictive data analysis were made. In the results, we describe the sample of students, their emotional intelligence profile, aptitudes and average performance in mathematics; the influence of gender on emotional intelligence, aptitudes and mathematical performance, and predictive value of emotional intelligence and aptitudes in the performance in this area of the curriculum of primary school. The data are discussed because of its importance in explaining the poor performance in mathematics of Spanish students in international tests (PISA, TIMSS), as well as promoting emotional intelligence and differential aptitudes of students as factors of academic success.Keywords: Gender, emotional intelligence, aptitudes, math performance, primary education. ResumenLa investigación sobre los determinantes del rendimiento sigue siendo de interés educativo y social. Introducción. El Cociente Intelectual ha resultado ser un predictor impreciso del éxito académico y laboral. Este hecho llevó a numerosos investigadores a sugerir a finales del siglo XX la implicación de una variable no tenida en cuenta hasta entonces: la inteligencia emocional. Debido a la importancia de esta competencia en el éxito académico, laboral y social, se cree necesario investigar cómo desarrollar la misma en la escuela. El presente trabajo se limita a estudiar el efecto de un programa didáctico, en la primera y más básica habilidad para su desarrollo: el reconocimiento de emociones. Método.El estudio se llevó a cabo con 75 alumnos (41.33% niños) de primer curso de Educación Primaria con edades comprendidas entre los 6 y 7 años (M = 6.58, DT = .323). Tras la aplicación del pretest y tras una elevada muerte experimental de 19 niños, la muestra final que realizó el postest resultó ser de 56 niños (22 niños y 34 niñas) con 20 sujetos experimentales y 36 controles. Para la evaluación de la percepción emocional, se elaboraron dos cuestionarios (pretest y postest) dirigidos a medir el grado en que los niños reconocían emociones a través de imágenes y situaciones contextuales.Resultados. Los resultados revelaron la posibilidad de mejorar el reconocimiento de emociones, especialmente en aquellos que tienen mayores carencias iniciales. Además se comprobó que el RE es independiente del input utilizado (imágenes o texto) y del CI.Discusión y conclusión. La efectividad del programa didáctico en este primer peldaño de la IE da paso esperanzador a otros estudios futuros que muestren el mismo margen de mejora en las tres etapas siguientes: la asimilación de emociones para facilitar el pensamiento, su comprensión y su regulación.

Emotional awareness is the basic emotional competence, which refers to individual differences in the way of being aware of the emotional functioning. Moods appear without specific reason, and are prolonged in time. Both are involved in multiple processes that modulate behavior and cognitive processes. Overall, the literature suggests a relationship between these variables and academic performance in school, however, is a contentious issue to be determined. The objective is to study the relationship of emotional awareness and moods academic performance. The participants were 1423 children, between 8-12 years old (M=9.88, SD=1.20), of both sexes (52.4 % girls) from Valencia. Participation was voluntary, and informed of the confidentiality of data. The assessment instruments used were Emotional Awareness Questionnarie, and Mood Questionnaire. For the statistical analysis of data SPSS V.21 was used correlation, t test, and regression analysis. The results show that there is a relationship between emotional variables and academic performance. Thus, those children with better academic performance have higher scores in Differentiating emotions, Verbal sharing emotions, Not hiding emotions, Body awareness, Attending to others' emotions, Analysis own emotions and Happiness. While obtained lower scores on Sadness, Fear and Anger. In conclusion, it seems that there is a relationship between emotional functioning of the child and academic results, as children with more emotional skills and better mood score. And it shows the importance of addressing emotions from the school context. In future research it would be interesting to meet other variables related to adaptation and school problems.Keywords: Emotional awareness, Mood, School performance, School age.
