Tracking the origins of the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus) by mitochondrial DNA sequencing.

Abstract: The different European populations of Ursus arctos, the brown bear, were recently studied for mitochondrial DNA polymorphism. Two clearly distinct lineages (eastern and western) were found, which may have diverged -450,000 years ago. In this context, it was interesting to study the cave bear, Ursus spelaeus, a species which became extinct 20,000 years ago. Consequently, cave bear mitochondrial genome fragments have only been retrieved as short sequences that up to now could be assembled into a partial control region and a single protein coding gene (11,12), which together span Ͻ10% of the expected 17 kb mitochondrial genome.
