Tracheal suture in rats with hypothyroidism: wound healing study

Abstract: Purpose:To evaluate the influence of hypothyroidism in tracheal wound healing process. Methods: A controlled study was designed with 48 male Wistar rats, divided into two groups: study and control groups. In the first one hypothyroidism was surgically induced and 10 weeks after, a tracheal opening followed by suture was performed in both groups, subdivided into 7, 14, and 21 days in accordance with the date of animals death. A laboratorial evaluation was performed to prove the decreased in thyroid function in … Show more

“…With the model, reproduction of some clinical signs seen in humans and dogs are achieved. Such signs are skin alteration (alopecia) in rats [ 13 ] , alterations in cardiovascular systems, and reninangiotensin in sheep [ 14 ] , and reduction in collagen [ 15 ] . The models used in reproducing congenital hypothyroidism have advantages and disadvantages in their applications ( • ▶ Table 2 ).…”

“…The influence of hypothyroidism on tissue repair has been few studied in the literature. In vivo study performed by Zimmermann et al (2009) 3 showed that hypothyroidism affects the healing process prolonging the inflammatory phase, decreasing the amount of collagen fibers and delaying its maturation and organization. Similar results were observed in this study.…”

“…Experimental studies have shown that the hypothyroid state has been associated to disruption of the body's metabolism, including healing process [1][2][3]. Thyroid hormones regulate body's metabolism and, among other actions, stimulate cellular differentiation and proliferation [4][5][6].…”

“…The reduction of the inflammatory cells in the PTP NF group could be due to the earlier progression of healing to the next phase, resulting in a faster recovery compared with the control group (which shows a slow progress). In addition, the role of thyroid hormone in protecting, preventing, and reducing inflammatory responses are reported earlier (Contreras-Jurado et al, 2011;Perrotta et al, 2014;Rittenhouse & Redei, 1997;Zimmermann et al, 2009). Hence, the number of inflammatory cells could be reduced in the group treated with PTP NF due to the property of T 3 to protect from excessive inflammation and also due to the enhanced healing response observed.…”
