High quality and accurate environmental investigations and analysis are essential to any assessment of contamination and to the decision-making process thereafter. Remediation decisions may be focused by health outcomes, whether already present or a predicted risk. The variability inherent in environmental media and analysis can be quantified statistically; uncertainty in models can be reduced by additional research; deep uncertainty exists when environmental or biomedical processes are not understood, or agreed upon, or remain uncharacterized. Deep uncertainty is common where health and environment interact. Determinants of health operate from the individual's genes to the international level; often several levels act synergistically. We show this in detail for lead (Pb). Pathways, exposure, dose and response also vary, modifying certainty. Multi-disciplinary approaches, built on high-quality environmental investigations, enable the management of complex and uncertain situations. High quality, accurate environmental investigations into pollution issues remain the cornerstone of understanding attributable health outcomes and developing appropriate responses and remediation. However, they are not sufficient on their own, needing careful integration with the wider contexts and stakeholder agendas, without which any response to the environmental assessment may very well founder. Such approaches may benefit more people than any other strategy.

Amaç: Kişisel bakım ürünleri ve kozmetikler, güvenilirlikleri tam olarak bilinmeyen çeşitli kimyasal içerikleri olan maddelerdir. Gebelikte kullanımlarının güvenilirliğini gösteren yeterli çalışma yoktur. Bu çalışmanın amacı gebelerin kişisel bakım ürünü ve kozmetik kullanım sıklığını ortaya koymaktır. Yöntemler: Bu kesitsel çalışmada 179 gebe kadına önceden hazırlanmış bir anket formu doldurtulmuştur. Bu anket formunda katılımcıların sosyodemografik özellikleri ve kozmetik/kişisel bakım ürünleri kullanım sıklıkları 26 ayrı kategoride değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular: Çalışmamızda gebelikte en sık kullanılan ürünler diş macunu, şampuan, sabun gibi genel hijyen ürünleri olarak saptandı. Bu ürünlerden sonra sırasıyla el kremi, ıslak mendil, duş jeli, saç kremi ve nemlendirici kullanımı gelmekteydi. Eğitim seviyesine göre değerlendirildiğinde ilkokul mezunlarında saç boyası, pudra ve fondöten kullanımı, üniversite mezunlarına göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı derecede daha yüksek saptandı. Deri tipi açık olanlarda güneşten koruyucu ürün kullanımı, koyu olanlara göre anlamlı derecede daha yüksek bulundu. Sonuç: Çalışmamız, gebelik döneminde hangi kişisel bakım ürünü ve kozmetik kullanımının daha sık olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Verilerimiz gebelerde kozmetik kullanımı ile ilişkili maruziyet çalışmalarının daha doğru olarak planlanmasına olanak sağlayacaktır. In this cross-sectional study, a pre-prepared questionnaire was filled out by 179 pregnant women. In this questionnaire, the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants and the usage frequency of cosmetics/personal care products were evaluated in 26 different categories. Results: In our study, the most frequently used products in pregnancy were general hygiene products such as toothpaste, shampoo, and soap. Hand cream, wet wipes, shower gel, hair conditioner, and moisturizer use were following these products, respectively. When evaluated according to the education levels, it was found that the usage of hair dye, powder and foundation in primary school graduates were significantly higher than university graduates. The use of sun protection products in fair skin types was found significantly higher than in dark ones. Conclusion: Our study reveals which personal care products and cosmetics are used more often during pregnancy. Our data will provide the exposure studies associated with cosmetic use in pregnancy to be planned more accurately.
