Towards the design of efficient nonbeacon-enabled ZigBee networks

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThis paper presents experimental results of the communication performance evaluation of a prototype ZigBee-based patient monitoring system commissioned in an in-patient floor of a Portuguese hospital (HPG -Hospital Privado de Guimarães). Besides, it revisits relevant problems that affect the performance of nonbeacon-enabled ZigBee networks. Initially, the presence of hidden-nodes and the impact of sensor node mobility are discussed. It was observed, for instance, that the message delivery ratio … Show more

“…It was observed experimentally that, during contention periods, most message losses occurred because of an implementation option adopted by the protocol stack manufacturer, 33 whereas few losses occurred because of successive collisions between contending devices. This implementation option refers to the CSMA-CA algorithm implementation and affects the router performance when it competes for the access to the wireless channel with a child device.…”

“…Beacon enabled IEEE 802.15.4 is completely defined by a structure called Superframe Structure. This structure consists of two periods, one is active and other is inactive period [4]. The active period consists of three parts, a beacon, a Contention access period (CAP), and a Contention free period (CFP).…”
