As CAD models continue to become more critical information sources in the product's lifecycle, it is necessary to develop efficient mechanisms to store, retrieve, and manage larger volumes of increasingly complex data. Because of their unique characteristics, 3D annotations can be used to embed design and manufacturing information directly into a CAD model, which makes models effective vehicles to describe aspects of the geometry or provide additional information that can be connected to a particular geometric element. However, access to this information is often limited, difficult, and even unavailable to external applications. As model complexity and volume of information continue to increase, new and more powerful methods to interrogate these annotations are needed.In this paper, we demonstrate how 3D annotations can be effectively structured and integrated into a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to provide a cohesive view of product-related information in a design environment. We present a strategy to organize and manage annotation information which is stored internally in a CAD model, and make it fully available through the PLM. Our method involves a dual representation of 3D annotations with enhanced data structures that provides shared and easy access to the information. We describe the architecture of a system which includes a software component for the CAD environment and a module that integrates with the PLM server. We validate our approach through a software prototype that uses a parametric modeling application and two commercial PLM packages with distinct data models.

With the advent of various services and applications of Semantic Web, semantic annotation had emerged as an important research area. The use of semantically annotated ontology had been evident in numerous information processing and retrieval tasks. One of such tasks is utilizing the semantically annotated ontology in product design which is able to suggest many important applications that are critical to aid various design related tasks. However, ontology development in design engineering remains a time consuming and tedious task that demands tremendous human efforts. In the context of product family design, management of different product information that features efficient indexing, update, navigation, search and retrieval across product families is both desirable and challenging. This paper attempts to address this issue by proposing an information management and retrieval framework based on the semantically annotated product family ontology. Particularly, we propose a document profile (DP) model to suggest semantic tags for annotation purpose. Using a case study of digital camera families, we illustrate how the faceted search and retrieval of product information can be accomplished based on the semantically annotated camera family ontology. Lastly, we briefly discuss some further research and application in design decision support, e.g. commonality and variety, based on the semantically annotated product family ontology.

This paper proposes a metadata schema relating to functionality based on Semantic Web technology for the management of the information content of engineering design documents. The schema enables us to annotate web-documents with RDF metadata, which represents devices as having specific functions. The metadata provide a clear and operational semantics for the functional terms in documents. The metadata schema is based on our own functional ontologies, which we believe to provide effective guidelines for consistent functional annotation. These ontologies have been developed over many years and deployed successfully in industry.We then demonstrate a document search system using the metadata, which enables us to retrieve web-documents using the types of function and relationships defined in the schema rather than more superficial terms. Such function-oriented management of information is especially useful in the conceptual design phase. It allows one to find previous cases of the same function in earlier designs and to find related patents.We go on to discuss the following two issues on the interoperability of the functional knowledge. The first is automatic transformation of the functional model in our modeling framework into a chart-style form commonly used for the FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) activity using a mapping between our ontology and an FMEA ontology. The second is translation of the functional model between our functional vocabulary and other taxonomy of function, that is, Functional Basis proposed by Stone et al. Another mapping between our functional vocabulary and Functional Basis can be done via a richer, generic reference ontology of functions. This mapping would aim at clarifying ontological differences between functional taxonomies and enabling translation between them.
