Towards Ontologies of Functionality and Semantic Annotation for Technical Knowledge Management

Abstract: Abstract. This research aims at promoting sharing of knowledge about functionality of artifacts among engineers, which tends to be implicit in practice. In order to provide a conceptual viewpoint for modeling and a controlled vocabulary, we have developed an ontological framework of functional knowledge. This framework has been successfully deployed in a manufacturing company. This paper firstly discusses an ontological definition of the concept of function from a device-centered viewpoint. Then, other types o… Show more

“…), geometrical description, and methods, and uses an ontology-based knowledge management system to process annotation information. The system "Funnotation" (Kitamura et al, 2006) is also relevant, as it was developed to aid CAM. Its complete semantic annotation model relies on processing text documents and contains four elements: the function of the device, how the function is achieved, the functional decomposition structure, and alternative solutions to achieve the functions.…”

“…It allows users to navigate according to the query-dependent concept categories in the ontology. Kitamura et al [33,34] presented the funnotation framework, an ontology-based function annotation framework for engineering document annotation. The framework assists designers to annotate documents based on the classes of product functions and the "way to achieve such a function" for the semantic-based design search system.…”

“…Related work is then discussed followed by some concluding remarks. The basic idea of functional annotation is discussed in [20]. This paper reports detail of the schema, the search system, and interoperability.…”

“…The resultant mappings would aim at clarifying the ontological difference between the functional taxonomies and at enabling translation between them. Part of the reference ontology has been discussed in [19] [20]. This paper discusses how to use the reference ontology for interoperability among functional taxonomies and the mapping under investigation.…”
