Abstract: The effectiveness of flipped classroom approaches can be improved by combining it with other pedagogical models such as inquiry-based learning. Implementing inquiry-based learning in flipped classroom scenarios requires teachers to plan arrangements for in- and out-of-class activities carefully. In this study, a design heuristic based on the 5E inquiry model was developed to support teachers’ practice of planning inquiry-based flipped classroom lessons. Following a design-based research approach, the design he… Show more

“…For example, one study proposed a teaching strategy framework for promoting active and reflective learning in flipped classrooms, which has been continuously improved through DBR (Fauzi and Hussain, 2016). Recently, some studies have verified their propositions and rationales in real flipped classrooms based on the DBR method (Froehlich, 2018;Atkinson et al, 2020;Schallert et al, 2021;Zhao et al, 2021a). Therefore, design-based research has the potential to be further implemented in flipped classrooms.…”

“…Inquiry-based learning encourages students to discover information themselves instead of the teacher stating facts [22]. It is regarded as one of the most important teaching models and enhances the self-learning skills as well as the problem solving skills of the students [22,23]. These learning techniques have been used to guide students to the correct answer in the interactive tutorials as opposed to telling them the answer.…”

“…One of the recommended learning models is learning cycle 5E, which involves students learning something new, or trying to understand something more deeply (Grau et al, 2021;Ylostalo, 2020). In addition, 5E can stimulate students' cognitive thinking processes allowing them to explore their knowledge through various exploratory experiences (Niederberger, 2009), increasing motivation (Goldston et al, 2010), and learning outcomes (Schallert et al, 2021).…”
