CPA S3000ZAA. tel.: 54-0342-4575211 *lmodini@fbcb.unl.edu.ar RESUMEN: Con el objetivo de evaluar la remoción por filtración de quistes de Giardia duodenalis y ooquistes de Cryptosporidium spp. en agua se construyó un filtro rápido por gravedad, a escala laboratorio, con arena como material filtrante. el filtro se operó a tasa constante (200 ml/min) y nivel ascendente. Mediante pruebas hidráulicas se estableció el espesor del lecho (0,75 m) y el tiempo de retención (5 min). el agua para las pruebas de remoción se preparó diluyendo una suspensión de (oo)quistes con agua destilada. Para recuperar los (oo) quistes no removidos, el agua filtrada se pasó a través de membranas de nitrato de celulosa de 0,45 µm de tamaño de poro. Los quistes se contaron en cámara de neubauer mientras que para estimar la concentración de ooquistes se usó el método de breed con coloración de Kinyoun. Se logró una remoción de 2,4 log (99,6 %) de ooquistes y 1,5 log (96,9 %) de quistes. To assess the ecotoxicological and sanitary situation in two European metropolis, Rostov-on-Don (Southern Russia) and Munich (Southern Germany), wastewaters of the two cities were examined with a panel of bacterial lux-biosensors:The presence of different genotoxic compounds and substances with the oxidative and membrane-damaging effects was revealed in contaminated wastewater with the applied panel of the lux-biosensors. The integral toxicity was approximately the same in both cities but demonstrated opposite trends. The presence of genotoxicants and peroxides was higher in the majority of the Munich wastewater samples. There were also differences in the presence of individual toxicants. The presence of the genotoxic compounds might also promote development and dissemination of several antibiotic resistance traits found in microorganisms, a feature more pronounced in Rostov-on-Don wastewaters. By means of polymerase chain reaction assay, antibiotic resistance genes to such antibiotics as ermB, vim and vanB were revealed in two Munich samples. Antibiotic resistance genes were present at all Rostov samples, and genes ndm, vanA, vanB and ermB were found. Taken together, the proposed analytical approach with the application of the constructed panel of biosensors can be applied for monitoring of the ecotoxicological contamination in the wastewaters of large cities.

Water quality monitoring is used to determine the impact of human activities on the environment. We evaluated water quality in the Água Boa stream, located within the municipality of Dourados, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, by analyzing physico-chemical, chemical, and microbiological parameters, as well as chlorophyll concentrations. Five sets of water samples were collected between December 2012 and November 2013 from three locations within the stream. The results showed the presence of Escherichia coli and antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas spp. strains and high concentrations of organic matter (total dissolved solids), inorganic species (Mg, Ca, and Fe), and agrochemical residues (thiamethoxam). The main stream water contaminants are derived from urban, industrial, and agricultural activities within the watershed. Given the presence of contaminants, it is important that such findings are disseminated in order to highlight the risks that contact with this water may pose to human health. To preserve the environment and improve site conditions, people would need to participate by demanding that normative national and international standards be respected and that the situation be supervised by the competent governmental agencies; this would make it possible to reverse or minimize contamination problems within the Água Boa stream.
