Toward an integration of family systems and developmental psychopathology approaches

Abstract: Developmental psychopathology and family systems theory are distinct approaches that have flourished in relative isolation from each other. Contributing to their distinctiveness, important differences exist between the approaches in the primary unit of analysis. Whereas developmental psychopathology commonly focuses on individual development as the main unit of analysis, the whole family unit is the central object of study in family systems approaches. Accordingly, the primary objective of developmental psycho… Show more

“…AAPIW's resilience is demonstrated in their lives prior to migrating to the United States, further developed during their experiences of adversities in their American lives, and transmitted to their offspring. These findings imply that resilience must be examined with a systems perspective (MacPhee, Lunkenheimer, & Riggs, 2015), which means that resilience is not simply an outcome but a dynamic process developed through multiple pathways (Davis & Cicchetti, 2004). Therefore, nurses who provide culturally sensitive health care services to AAPIW populations must not only integrate interventions that promote AAPIW's resilience but also consider the broader context in which this resilience is developed.…”

“…Guided by a number of principles that bind family systems theory and developmental psychopathology (summarized in Davies and Cicchetti 2004), this study sought to examine the nature and course of the relationship between family dysfunction and childhood anxiousness. We applied a pattern-centered approach to generate distinct life course trajectories for both variables, allowing us to respect the influence of continuity, interconnectness, contextual factors, and timing.…”

“…We apply a multiconceptual backdrop that comprises complementary, yet distinct approaches: family systems theory; developmental psychopathology; and the life-course analytical framework. This approach is inspired, in part, by Davies and Cicchetti (2004) and Repetti et al (2002).…”

“…Divorce can produce a general sense of vulnerability to abandonment or loss [34] and has been linked to increased attention to threat cues [35], exaggerated threat appraisals [36], and emotional and biological sensitivity toward potential threat [37,38]. For children of divorce, a sense of vulnerability may be particularly salient when fathers leave the home and the availability of a primary caregiving source becomes unclear [39].…”
