Abstract: This work grew from initiatives of the International Society of Biometeorology's Commission on Climate, Tourism and Recreation (ISBCCTR). The ISBCCTR was formed during the 15th Congress of the ISB held in November 1999 in Sydney, Australia. The aim of ISBCCTR is to promote research in tourism climatology. The first formal meeting of the Commission took place at the Meliton Resort, Halkidiki, Greece, 5-10 October 2001. “…A change to warmer and drier summers in countries with moderate climate conditions would make them more attractive for outdoor/sport activities and nature-based tourism pursuits such as hiking, hill walking, biking, camping, golfing, sunbathing, and swimming (de Freitas, 2003;Gómez Martín, 2005;Richardson & Loomis, 2005;Scott & Jones, 2006;Scott, Jones & Konopek, 2007). This indicates that tourism to rural destinations is particularly weather sensitive unlike tourism to urban destinations.…”

“…Considerable effort has therefore been put into defining a suitable metric for "favourable climate" from the tourist perspective. Such an indicator can assist investors in choosing where to develop new destinations, or help tour operators or holidaymakers to plan their activities (see for instance de Freitas 2003). Since the 1960s, numerous such metrics have been developed and applied (see overviews in Besancenot 1990;de Freitas 2003).…”

“…Previous studies reveal that weather and climate are important factors for tourism decision making (Lin et al, 2006;Hamilton and Lau, 2005;de Freitas, 2003;Matzarakis et al, 2004;Didaskalou et al, 2007). Effective planning and management of a destination must take account of many factors that influence one's choice for a holiday to a specific region especially when the tourism product is coherent with the market segment of spa tourism (Didaskalou et al, 2007).…”

“…The issue of seasonality in tourism flows has attracted the attention of tourism researchers for several decades (Amelung et al, 2007). Climate is an important part of a region's tourism resource base, but its role in determining the suitability of a region for tourism is often assumed to be self-evident and therefore to require no elaboration (de Freitas, 2003). Tourism in Greece has been growing significantly in certain areas such as Rodos, Crete, Corfu and Myconos.…”
