Abstract: This paper describes the relationships between tourism and the agricultural production of traditional products, the latter having achieved new levels of appreciation in recent years as a result of quality designations. In this context, agro-food products can be considered as gastronomic tourism resources that enable tourism both to be developed and itself become a tool for promoting and commercialising quality agro-food products. These two circumstances merge around a single aim: the local development of areas… Show more

“…Historical legacies have contributed to the preservation of local food networks which in other regions have disappeared or never existed (Fonte, 2008;Renting et al, 2003). According to Parrott et al (2002) and corroborated by Sonnino (2007) and Brunori and Rossi (2007) in Italy, Pouzenc et al (2007) in France, and Armesto and Gómez-Martín (2006) in Spain, the association between terroir and tradition frames the notion of quality. “…Unlike other countries (for example, the US and Australia), these are not novel. Generally there is limited literature regarding Spanish AFNs with the exception of information regarding the PDO/PGI areas (Armesto and Gómez-Martín, 2006;Sanz and Macías, 2005;Molinero et al, 2004), or discussion about the scope of organic farming (Armesto, 2008). However, studying food certification in Spain is internationally relevant for its particularities (Mutersbaugh et al, 2005, p. 383), not otherwise raised by other research based in North European and North American contexts.…”

“…The above is usefully demonstrated by Armesto López & Gómez Martín's (2006) recent account of gastro‐tourism in the Catalan region of Priorat in Spain, where traditional wine production supports local economic development. In policy terms, the concept of agricultural multifunctionality fits comfortably with the second pillar of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), and in particular the Rural Development Regulation's (1257/99) attempt to broaden rural policy, away from mainstream agriculture and towards a more diversified rural economy (Lowe et al .…”

“…These are often high-quality restaurants which also offer authenticity in the form of local products and typical gastronomy, adapted to the dietary requirements of hikers. In this new phase gastronomy was conceived as a form of consumption of the territory (culture and traditions), which added quality to the tourism experience [60]. This philosophy is evident in many of the alternatives on the market today, and there are even specific products along these lines.…”
