Toscana virus meningitis in Portugal, 2002-2005

Abstract: Toscana virus infection is endemic in Italy, but has also been documented in other Mediterranean countries. Our aim was to investigate the occurrence of Toscana virus (TOSV) meningitis in children and young adults in a metropolitan area in the north of Portugal. Cerebrospinal fluid samples from 308 patients with the diagnosis of meningitis and with negative bacterial culture were tested for enteroviruses and herpesviruseses by reverse transcription PCR. Those samples that proved negative for enterovirus and he… Show more

“…Nevertheless, the seroprevalence rate obtained in dogs in the present study, together with the seroprevalence detected in humans (ranging from 2% in control population to 4.2% in population with central nervous system disease) [10] and the reports of human cases of TOSV meningitis [9, 10] demonstrate the circulation of the virus or TOSV-like viruses in Portugal.…”

“…The second case to be reported is traced back in 1996 [42] . From 2002 to 2005, 106 CSF samples, collected between June and September in patients younger than 30-year-old, were tested for TOSV by RT-PCR, and resulted in the detection of 6 positives [43] . In a seroprevalence study targeting 538 patients who were suspect of vector-borne virus infections between 2004 and 2008, 4.2% of those with neurological signs, and 1.3% of those without neurological signs were found to contain IgG reactive against TOSV [44] .…”

“…In Portugal, a retrospective study performed on cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with a diagnosis of meningitis collected between May and September from 2002 through 2005 revealed the presence of TOSV in 5.6% patients, as a causative agent of neurological disease in Portuguese inhabitants [24]. A large epidemiological study conducted in the province of Granada by a Spanish group [25] established TOSV as one of the most important etiological agents of CNS diseases.…”
