“…The ratios of SA to FA and of SA II to SA I are larger in the present data than in a study by Trulsson and Essick (1997;SA/FA, 27/23 vs. 8/14; SA II/SA I, 11/16 vs. 2/6). The ratio of SA to FA afferents is also higher in our data than in a study by Biedenbach and Chan (1971), although they did not classify SA afferents into SA I and SA II types. These differences may due to differences in the methods of stimulus, e.g., whether or not stretch stimulus is applied to the Fig.…”

“…Similar to the present study, most afferents have been reported to supply the dorsal surface of the tongue in which afferents exhibiting small receptive field innervate the tip of the tongue. Porter (1966) found that all of the afferents are the FA type, whereas Biedenbach and Chan (1971) found 74% of 28 units to be the FA type. Recently, as was mentioned above, Trulsson and Essick (1997) identified 22 lowthreshold mechanoreceptive afferents in the human lingual nerve and classified these units into three types: FA I (n ϭ 14), SA I (n ϭ 6), and SA II (n ϭ 2), similar to the present study.…”

“…Les fibres du NL sont chémosensibles, thermosensibles, mécanosensibles, proprioceptives et nociceptives [28]. Parmi les fibres chémosensibles, un petit groupe est activé par l'application linguale de composés chimiques tels que le menthol [3].…”

“…The chorda tympani contains gustatory afferent fibres from fungiform papillae on the dorsal surface of the tongue, mechanosensitive fibres (Biedenbach & Chan, 1971), preganglionic parasympathetic secretomotor fibres to the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands and efferent vasodilator fibres to the tongue (Erici & Uvnas, 1952). Previous studies on the gustatory fibres in the cat (Pfaffman, 1941(Pfaffman, , 1955Cohen, Hagiwara & Zotterman, 1955;Nagaki, Yamashita & Sato, 1964;Ishiko & Sato, 1973) have revealed a range of fibres with different response properties but the majority of them respond to more than one type of gustatory stimulus.…”
