Abstract: Leptospirosis is a public health problem worldwide and its etiology remains unclear. Its pathogenesis involves a complex interaction between host and infecting microorganism. The inflammatory reaction that controls the infection process also underscores many pathophysiological events occurring in leptospirosis. We investigated the presence of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in renal tissues by immunohistochemical and histopathological examination in animals experimentally inoculated wi… Show more

“…IL-6 and TNF-␣ were also induced in higher proportions in mice than in hamsters within the first days of infection. This is consistent with the increasing immunodetection of TNF-␣ and IL-6 in the kidneys of resistant BALB/c mice infected with a virulent strain of L. interrogans serovar Canicola (25). Mice deficient for the TNF-␣ receptor exhibited more severe residual kidney inflammation after inoculation with L. interrogans serovar Copenhageni, suggesting that this cytokine might be important in the rapid control of renal lesions during infection (3).…”

“…Photomicrographs were taken with light microscope (Olympus America Inc.,USA) equipped with an automatic camera system with magnification of 400x by two histopathologists, blinded to sample type. 18,19 Data was analyzed with oneway Anova and LSD test. Data was analyzed by Anova and LSD test at 95% significance level.…”
