Tissue engineering; strategies, tissues, and biomaterials

Abstract: Current tissue regenerative strategies rely mainly on tissue repair by transplantation of the synthetic/natural implants. However, limitations of the existing strategies have increased the demand for tissue engineering approaches. Appropriate cell source, effective cell modification, and proper supportive matrices are three bases of tissue engineering. Selection of appropriate methods for cell stimulation, scaffold synthesis, and tissue transplantation play a definitive role in successful tissue engineering. A… Show more

“…It constitutes a protective barrier towards outer world, and thus is susceptible to damage resulting from inter alia burns, surgical procedures, or diabetic ulcers. To enhance wound repair and regeneration, many tissue-engineered skin products have been developed [232][233][234][235][236]. In general, biomaterials for treatment of skin injuries can be divided on two groups including wound dressings and skin substitutes ( Table 1).…”

“…In other words, they should have optimal water vapor transmission ratio (WVTR) and great ability to absorb wound exudate (if it occurs). Moreover, modern wound dressings should also accelerate wound healing [232][233][234]236,[242][243][244][245]. Progress in the field of engineering of biomaterials has led to the development of many promising wound dressings.…”

“…Architected scaffolds should exhibit the proper biocompatibility, cell proliferation, growth, adhesion, and differentiation. Designed scaffolds should also possess the high interconnected porosity with enormous specific surface area to provide the proper milieu with sufficient oxygen and nutrient permeation to support cell population and their distribution appropriately …”

“…As a result, Sn derivatives generate PLAs with sufficiently high‐molecular weight. Nevertheless, tin has serious environmental threats; hence, a substitute metal had to be considered . Single‐site active metal alkoxide catalyst precursors were applied to precede ring opening polymerization of PLA .…”
