Neogene to Quaternary volcanic/magmatic activity in the Carpathian-Pannonian Region (CPR) occurred between 21 and 0.1 Ma with a distinct migration in time from west to east. It shows a diverse compositional variation in response to a complex interplay of subduction with roll-back, back-arc extension, collision, slab break-off, delamination, strike-slip tectonics and microplate rotations, as well as in response to further evolution of magmas in the crustal environment by processes of differentiation, crustal contamination, anatexis and magma mixing. Since most of the primary volcanic forms have been affected by erosion, especially in areas of post-volcanic uplift, based on the level of erosion we distinguish: (1) areas eroded to the basement level, where paleovolcanic reconstruction is not possible; (2) deeply eroded volcanic forms with secondary morphology and possible paleovolcanic reconstruction; (3) eroded volcanic forms with remnants of original morphology preserved; and (4) the least eroded volcanic forms with original morphology quite well preserved. The large variety of volcanic forms present in the area can be grouped in a) monogenetic volcanoes and b) polygenetic volcanoes and their subsurface/intrusive counterparts that belong to various rock series found in the CPR such as calc-alkaline magmatic rock-types (felsic, intermediate and mafic varieties) and alkalic types including K-alkalic, shoshonitic, ultrapotassic and Na-alkalic. The following volcanic/subvolcanic forms have been identified: (i) domes, shield volcanoes, effusive cones, pyroclastic cones, stratovolcanoes and calderas with associated intrusive bodies for intermediate and basic calc-alkaline volcanism; (ii) domes, calderas and ignimbrite/ash-flow fields for felsic calc-alkaline volcanism and (iii) dome flows, shield volcanoes, maars, tuffcone/tuff-rings, scoria-cones with or without related lava flow/field and their erosional or subsurface forms (necks/ plugs, dykes, shallow intrusions, diatreme, lava lake) for various types of K-and Na-alkalic and ultrapotassic magmatism. Finally, we provide a summary of the eruptive history and distribution of volcanic forms in the CPR using several sub-region schemes.

The presence of tourmaline at the Nagybörzsöny ore mineralization (Börzsöny Mts, Hungary) has been known for 60 years. On the northern part of the Rózsa Hill, in the vicinity of the so called Rózsa Mine, the tourmaline forms acicular crystals up to 1 mm in length; furthermore, it is also present as acicular-radial and felt-like clusters in the cavities of a strongly silicified rock, and it can appear as inclusions in the subsequently formed minerals (quartz, calcite, siderite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite). Because of the former wet chemical analysis, the Nagybörzsöny tourmaline was referred to dravite in the literature. According to the new electron-microprobe analyses, the tourmaline is zoned and represents the foitite (core) and magnesio-foitite (rim) mineral species. The compositions of Nagybörzsöny tourmaline, measured at the highest concentrations of iron and magnesium, are the following (based on 31 anions): ([] 4.00 . Lattice parameters, calculated from the X-ray powder-diffraction data, are: a = 15.901(6) Å; c = 7.190(4) Å, V = 1574(1) Å 3. The tourmaline precipitated from hydrothermal solution, the temperature of which could be above 260 °C. The chemistry of the tourmaline was determined mainly by the composition of the hydrothermal fluid; in this respect the composition of the host rock, as well as the prevailing conditions of temperature and pressure, could only be secondary. Chemical zoning of the crystals is primarily due to the Fe ↔ Mg substitution. This substitution is interpreted as a record of the mixing of Fe-rich hydrothermal fluid and Mg-and Ca-rich descending waters. The acicular habit of the tourmaline crystals can be linked to crystal-chemical reasons, since the high Al-content and the relatively low (Fe+Mg)-content facilitated the rapid growth of the crystals in the direction of the c-axis.Keywords: foitite, magnesio-foitite, tourmaline, electron-microprobe analyses, X-ray powder diffraction, Nagybörzsöny, Hungary ÖsszefoglalásTurmalin jelenléte a nagybörzsönyi ércesedésben már 60 éve ismert. A korábban készült nedveskémiai elemzés alapján a szakirodalomba drávitként bekerült turmalin az újabb elektron-mikroszondás vizsgálatok alapján zónás, és a foitit-magneziofoitit ásványfajokat képviseli. A vasban és magnéziumban legdúsabb elemzési pontokon mért összetétel (31 anionra számolva): ([] . A turmalin hidrotermás oldatból vált ki, melynek hőmérséklete 260 °C fölött lehetett. Lithofacies associations of the first-stage volcanic activity of the Miocene Börzsöny Mountains, North Hungary, have been reconstructed in the light of detailed volcanological mapping, volcanic glass geochemistry and evaluation of palaeogeographic data. In the deeply eroded hilly area, near-vent primary and distal/reworked ring-plain volcaniclastics, preserved in a mosaical pattern, have been identified. Facies distribution reveals two probable facies continua: (a) a shallow-marine silicic explosive to resedimented volcaniclastic; and (b) a subaerial debris-flow to fluvialand shallow-marine debris-flow/turbidite association. Facies characteristics and distribution allow us to (a) substantiate small-sized calderas, the eroded rims or proximal palaeoslopes of which have been preserved by volcaniclastic breccias (mostly debris-flow deposits); (b) reconstruct a well-developed volcaniclastic apron, spread mostly to the north and representing a south-to-north transport direction. Palaeogeographic interpretation of facies successions indicates a shallowwater initial explosive stage and a subsequent, rapidly evolving, emergent ring plain stage fed by different types of volcaniclastic debris flows.
