Three new species of Krogia (Ramalinaceae, lichenised Ascomycota) from the Paleotropics

Abstract: Krogiaborneensis Kistenich & Timdal, K.isidiata Kistenich & Timdal and K.macrophylla Kistenich & Timdal are described as new species, the first from Borneo and the two latter from New Caledonia. The new species are supported by morphology, secondary chemistry and DNA sequence data. Krogiaborneensis and K.isidiata contain sekikaic and homosekikaic acid, both compounds reported here for the first time from the genus. Krogiamacrophylla contains an unknown compound apparently related to boninic acid as the major c… Show more

“…For DNA extraction, PCR amplification and DNA sequencing of the mitochondrial ribosomal small subunit (mtSSU) and the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS: ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2), we followed the protocols outlined in Kistenich et al (2018a). For sequence assembly and preliminary alignment, we used Geneious R9 (Kearse et al 2012).…”

“…They often differ, however, from Phyllopsora in ascospore size and arrangement, presence of prothallus, thallus construction and chemistry (Kalb and Elix 1995; Kistenich et al 2018b; Timdal 2008a; 2009). Recently, Kistenich et al (2018a) described three new species of Krogia from Asia and Oceania, which were all tentatively identified as Phyllopsora sp., indicating the morphological similarity between these two genera.…”
