Three cases of bone metastases in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors

Abstract: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare, but represent the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. Tumor resection is the treatment of choice for localized disease. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (imatinib, sunitinib) are the standard therapy for metastatic or unresectable GISTs. GISTs usually metastasize to the liver and peritoneum. Bone metastases are uncommon. We describe three cases of bone metastases in patients with advanced GISTs: two women (82 and 54 years of age), and one… Show more

“…In addition, it is also rare for GIST-derived bone metastasis to be detected in cases in which the primary tumor is of unknown origin [11]. On radiological images, GIST-derived bone metastasis presents as an osteolytic lesion [5] (Fig. 3).…”

“…It should be noted that it is rare for bone metastasis to be detected as the first metastasis (or as a solitary lesion) from GIST [5]. In addition, it is also rare for GIST-derived bone metastasis to be detected in cases in which the primary tumor is of unknown origin [11].…”

“…Finally, RT can be used for palliation of local symptoms. In the setting of locally progressive and/or metastatic GISTs, short courses of RT have been shown to be effective for tumor control and symptom management, with low rates of toxicity 43–46…”
