“…Data from several retrospective surveys indicate that for patients in whom surgery is delayed for thoracic aneurysms, rupture was the most common cause of death, with death rates ranging from 42% to 74%. (21) For this reason, it is reasonable that, in a wellstructured system, surgical treatment should be instituted immediately after diagnosis and elective procedures would, therefore, surpass emergency procedures in volume. It would be interesting to correlate these findings with necropsy results (of both intact aneurysms, in patients who died from other causes, and patients who died from ruptured aneurysms), as proposed by Lobato et al, (22) for a more comprehensive notion on the impact of this elective versus emergency proportion.…”
