Third Epidemiological Analysis of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma in the Central Region of Japan from 2006 to 2015

Abstract: The present study aimed to clarify the incidence and clinical outcomes of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in the Chubu region of Japan from 2006 to 2015, compared with previous reports. A retrospective analysis was conducted based on medical records from 40 hospitals located in the Chubu region in the central Japanese main island, with a population of around 22.66 million individuals. This study was designed in line with to two previous clinical studies into NPC conducted in the same area of Japan. We recruited… Show more

“…Clinical studies reported that a high proportion of NPC patients were confirmed as AJCC stages III-IV at diagnosis [16][17][18]. Because cancer stage is an unchangeable factor and closely linked to a high mortality [3,4], this highlights the issue of how to prolong survival for advanced-stage NPC patients. QoL in recent studies was recommended as a vital outcome measure in clinical decision-making, especially for advanced-stage cancer patients [6,7,31,32].…”

“…In recent years, the medical application of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and optimization of chemotherapy strategies have prominently prolonged survival and lessened toxicities to normal tissues for patients with nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) [1]. However, the 5-year survival rate for advanced-stage NPC (stages III and IV) is still at an ameliorable level, both in Asian areas (e.g., 23-79% in Japan and 60-79% in Taiwan) and European areas (e.g., 31-55% in Finland) [2][3][4]. Because the current anatomy-based staging system is insufficient for predicting therapeutic benefits or clinical prognosis [1], investigations that consider other clinical and non-clinical factors to help survival prediction are warranted.…”

“…Approximately 1.5% of cancer cases are associated with EBV infection amongst all cancer cases globally ( 11-13 ). NPC is primarily associated with EBV, and the EBV infection frequency in NPC is varied based on ethnic and geographical differences ( 23 ). Almost all the NPC cases from the endemic regions presented with EBV infection and in non-endemic regions, NPC was negative for EBV.…”
