Thermal Field Theory

Abstract: Now in paperback, this text introduces the theoretical framework for describing the quark-gluon plasma, an important new state of matter. The first part of this book is a self-contained introduction to relativistic thermal field theory. Topics include the path integral approach, the real and the imaginary time formalisms, fermion fields and gauge fields at finite temperature. Useful techniques such as the evaluation of frequency sums or the use of cutting rules are illustrated on various examples. The second p… Show more

“…If this were the traditional four-dimensional set up, we could have introduced the p-wave diquark condensate (LR-pair) in the Nambu-Gor'kov propagator. [Such condensate would have occupied the anti-diagonal slots of the matrix (32).] However, this is not allowed in our theory.…”

“…Notice that if the condensates, ∆ ± , in the denominators vanish there are terms that diverge as the energy is scaled toward the Fermi surface, i.e., p 0 → 0 and | p| → µ. This is essentially due to the sign structure of the chemical potential in the matrix (32) and to the fact that the ∆-matrices occupy off block-diagonal components. This infrared divergence is cured by the formation of the condensate and the ∆ properly behaves as such a condensate.…”

“…Current correlator and the spectral function of vector mesons Thermal field theory is the appropriate framework to carry out perturbative calculations in the medium. In the real time version of this formalism two point functions assume a 2 × 2 matrix structure on account of the shape of the contour in the complex time plane [16,17]. It is convenient to begin with the quantity,…”
