Thermal behavior of PLA plasticized by commercial and cardanol-derived plasticizers and the effect on the mechanical properties

Abstract: This paper is aimed at studying the thermal properties of poly(lactic acid), PLA with different plasticizers. Plasticized PLA was obtained by mixing and extruding PLA with 20 mass% of neat cardanol, epoxidized cardanol acetate (ECA) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) 400. The glass transition of completely amorphous samples, melting and crystallization behavior of plasticized PLA were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. Results obtained show that, below Tg, a higher enthalpy relaxation occurs for PLA p… Show more

“…The DSC curves of 3D printing filaments displayed endothermic T g regions and endothermic T m peaks. This shows that the endothermic T g peak is related to PLA chain relaxation [ 33 ]. Table 1 shows that the neat PLA filament has lower T g and T m values when compared with the filaments of PLA composited with ZnO nanoflowers.…”

“…A decrease in the molecular weight of PLA results in decreasing its melt strength. [54,72,73] POSS is a new generation of nanofillers with organic/inorganic hybrid structures having enough potential of reinforcement and improved thermal stability of polymers. The incorporation of POSS nanoparticles provides PLA with better flame retardancy, enhanced thermal stability, and molecular reinforcement.…”

“…Currently, there are different kinds of cardanol plasticizers including cardanol acetate, epoxidated cardanol acetate, methoxylated hydroxyethyl cardanol, and cardanol glycidyl ether 37 . Although, the major efforts have explored the use of cardanol‐based plasticizers for PVC, several recent endeavors have investigated the utilization of cardanol‐based plasticizers for compostable polymers, mostly for PLA 38–43 . The functionalized cardanol in biobased polymers and additives possesses unique strength properties 44 .…”
