A systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of acyclovir 3% ophthalmic ointment to idoxuridine in curing herpetic keratitis by Day 7 of treatment

The choice of Day 7 was influenced by the natural history of the disease, its use as a time point in head to head clinical trials, and the fact that resolution of HK in seven days is a favorable outcome and a reasonable therapeutic goal [ 1 ]. In further support of Day 7 as the key endpoint for this meta-analysis untreated HK can take up to three weeks to resolve making resolution within a week a therapeutic success, and many of the original idoxuridine studies utilized a day seven endpoint in their analyses [ 6 , 10 ].…”
