Theileriosis in a Missouri Beef Herd Caused by Theileria buffeli

Abstract: Abstract.A 6-year-old Simmental cow infected with Theileria buffeli had a clinical disease characterized by theilerial parasitemia, macrocytic normochromic anemia with acanthocytosis and spherocytosis, lymphoid hyperplasia (lymphocytosis, edematous lymphadenomegaly), dysproteinemia, evidence of liver disease, and a low serum antibody titer against T. buffeli. The cow was in a herd in which all cattle originated in Missouri; 22/75 (29%) of cattle had a theilerial parasitemia and 26/75 (35%) had titers to T. buf… Show more

“…This is in contrast to most previous reports that document significantly lower TEC, Hb, and PCV values in theileriosis-affected cattle [36,37] . These alterations have been attributed to parasitaemia-induced-anaemia and immunemediated erythrophagocytosis [37] .…”

These alterations have been attributed to parasitaemia-induced-anaemia and immunemediated erythrophagocytosis [37] . The lack of difference in haematological indices of T. annulata infection Cholistani cattle in this study may indicate an innate potential to maintain haematological parameters at consistent levels regardless of stressors, as reported by Farooq et al [2] .…”

“…annulata causes liver failure [35,39]. Moreover, extra-vascular proteinaceous fluid in body cavities due to diseased lymph nodes [36,40], anorexia and diarrhea also cause hypoproteinemia [23,41]. There was highly significant decrease after treatment were observed in serum ALT and AST level in Groups I and II as compared to its pre-treatment level in all diseased groups.…”

“…These data are similar to those found by other authors in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Tunisia [13,14,15, 22, 27] and constitute further evidence of the high prevalence of T. buffeli, indicating that it may be the most common piroplasm in the Mediterranean basin. T. buffeli is considered a non-pathogenic or scarcely pathogenic species, although some cases of disease have been reported [9, 29]. …”
